He lowered his hand, turning back to her. “See, that’s just the thing. I’m almost certain I’ll screw it up. And that’s the last thing I want to do. It’s fine, really. I’ve had time to adjust. I watched her kiss Jace enough.” He rolled his eyes. Maia couldn’t help but laugh. She wasn’t fond of Jace either. Simon reciprocated the laugh, continuing, “And the way she talked about somebody she met recently. She said something was different. She tried to play it off saying it was the same way we clicked as kids. But I know her better than that. She felt a spark with that person. And I would love for her to have that person. I’ll be fine. My feelings for her have always been pretty delusional anyway. I don’t know. I should stop talking.”

Concern taking over, she knocked on the bathroom door without realising that it wasn’t latched. It swung open, almost inviting Clary in. Cautiously, she advanced into the tiny, tiled room. “Maia?”

in chapter 4:

It was hard to tell who was injured; everything happened in a blur, but Maia couldn’t just stand there. She jumped between Clary and Cory, claws and teeth at the ready. This time, Cory didn’t have the upper hand on her. She could see rings of irritation around his ankles, fur missing, clearly from the restraints that they’d had him in. Nonetheless, Cory held his own for longer than Maia would’ve expected.

She bit her lip with a small hesitant nod.

“It’s okay,” Clary said softly. “Do you want me to come with you to see Luke? If you’re not comfortable, I can get out of your hair.”
