today I found out my mother doesn’t know what dandelions are and now I’m wondering what other strange secrets she’s been quietly harboring
Where do you live that you don’t have dandelions?
we have dandelions EVERYWHERE, they are basically our State Weed, it is absolutely impossible that my mom has never interacted with a dandelion before, this requires further investigation
So after extensive interrogation I have an update:
my mom is in fact aware that dandelions exist. she temporarily forgot the name and there was some miscommunication.
the truth is actually weirder
she’s aware dandelions look like this
she is familiar with this flower. she knows the name of this flower. she declines to believe, however, that these are also dandelions
she does not believe these are the same plant. I tried to explain, and she thought I was either misinformed or lying. so I asked her what exactly did she think the yellow ones were called?
she answered, with complete confidence: Daffodils.

that poll going around of the guy who thought "people only eat tofu as a bit because they're deranged vegans" or whatever really crystalizes something that i have never been able to precisely say - which is "a nonzero fraction of people who start picky-eater discourse just happen to precisely hate those foods which are not from north america and refuse to introspect on this whatsoever"
In contrast some people say "there aren't any picky eaters in Asia 🙄" but this is laughably untrue. I have a cousin in India who refused until his 20s to eat anything in a sauce. as you can imagine in India this was difficult. he basically had to pick things out of curry and wipe them dry
A surprising amount of people are extremely inflexible when it comes to food. It's truly a global phenomenon.
When I worked in tourism in Europe, we knew we had to have lists with Indian and Chinese restaurants ready because a considerable chunk of tourists from these places (especially older tourists, travelling to Europe for the first time) refuse to eat any kind of cuisine other than their own. I've also noticed a similar thing in Japan. When I visited an Indian restaurant a short while ago, a bunch of Indian tourists, including their suitcases, entered the restaurant at the same time as me. Literally the first thing they did after arriving was to seek out an Indian restaurant.
I also know stories from travellers from different parts of Europe going to Spain and bringing their sausages and whatnot with them, because they couldn't spend two weeks without eating a specific sausage. Same with Chinese tourists and certain meat products.
A Korean exchange student I lived with packed half of her suitcase with Korean food when she came to Japan, because she didn't trust that she could buy the kinds of foods she liked.
I have an almost endless amount of stories like these. I'm actually the freakish exception, because I eat almost any cuisine and primarily only avoid foods due to my food intolerance. Which is also funny - I have a food intolerance that includes all forms of allium (onion, garlic etc.) and I am literally less complicated when it comes to food than people who consider themselves "normal" eaters.
