I NEED THE ENTIRE DEAD BOY DETECTIVES FANDOM TO UNDERSTAND THAT EDWIN PAYNE IS A TEENAGE BOY. HE IS 16. HE IS NOT A GROWN MAN. DO NOT SHIP WITH HIM ADULTS. *cough* *cough* cat king *cough* *cough*
i have a compulsion to combine any and all of my favorite interests so i commed @eurydicepaine (ig: @/cicadaideo) for these PHENOMENAL heated rivalry scenes redrawn as bashslash and they were so good i had to share them with the people 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️
(their comms are open so ppl should also go comm them :] )
My headcanon is that Edwin loves when Charles physically defends him. He had to do that for himself for so long that he would be exhausted by it. Charles takes that uncertainty and unpleasant possibility away. He steps between Edwin and threats, and he threatens those who could hurt Edwin (such as the Night Nurse.)
I also think this might have a connection to Edwin's not wanting to learn to box and punch; as he said, Charles will hit the mad driller with his cricket bat.
Edwin trusts Charles so much, trusts him to protect his hard-won safety. He's safe, and he's loved, and he's not alone anymore.
He also probably finds it hot
A thought that I've had for a while is that Charles doesn't mind secrets about the past. It would be a bit hypocritical of him, seeing as he'd rather not talk about his family life. So he is completely okay with Edwin keeping secrets about his own life, and parts of his time in Hell.
What Charles DOES MIND are secrets in the present tense. He told Edwin about the kiss with Crystal right away, because he thought it was important his partner and best friend of 30 years should know. Even though Crystal cut it off as a one-time thing, he didn't want that lingering, or for it to come up from anyone else. At the same time, he KNOWS something is up with The Cat King, and he knows it's bothering Edwin to keep it quiet. That is a PRESENT secret and it bothers the heck out of Charles, because he feels like Edwin should be able to trust him.

Something about Charles and Edwin each thinking that theres something intrinsically wrong with them while believing that the other is the best person that they know.
Reading fanfiction and wanting to scream about how they still own my whole heart
we (rightfully) talk a lot about Charles' response to Edwin's confession, because jesusfuckingchrist.
but Edwin? come on. the look he gives Charles after his speech is so beautiful. like this?
this is a boy remembering exactly why he fell in love in the first place
Dead Boy Detectives - About Hell
Finally got around to watching Dead Boys Detectives. (Yes, yes, I know I’m 2 years late) And it's honestly so good. But…
Can we talk about how Hell looked empty to Charles at first?
About how Edwin told him you had to experience Hell to see it?
Can we talk about how Edwin knows that for a fact. And why would he know that unless at some point during his early years in Hell, it appeared empty to him as well? On top of that, the spider demon is not shown capable of talking. Which means his first escape attempts were before the spider demon, when he belonged to a demon who could and did explain this fact to him. Likely between his first and second escape attempts.
Then can we talk about how Charles physically never experienced Hell. He was never touched by any demon, never tortured. Hell was empty to him until he was forced to witness Edwin’s fate. And that was enough. Hell itself decided Charles witnessing Edwin’s torture was an experience equal to experiencing Hell’s torments for him.
Not sure I can be normal about either of those thoughts.
I think the pixie magic should've had a gayer effect on Crystal

I made another DBDA edit guys
I decided i will post them on tiktok too now cause this series make me lose it
charles & edwin + hands♥
So much tenderness, I can't!!!
anyways if you want a coming of age show with supernatural elements being used as metaphors for queerness and healing from trauma that is done well and clearly written with care by the writers i highly reccomend dead boy detectives to you all
So the thing that drives me crazy about the boys’ “detective license”
(Which reads: Certification to Practice London, United Kingdom By authority conferred by the Other Galaxy Comics we bestow upon to Charles Rowland & Edwin Payne the Honour to practice and a certification of Licensed Detective Agency in recognition of proficiency and professionalism in the art of gathering information, surveillance, subterfuge, critical thinking, the recognition of pertinent information that may be lost in the sea of the superfluous and leaping over dead ends. Above all else the protection of law and order when it is convenient to do so and the wisdom to know how to not get caught when it is not.)
Is that…
They really are just two 16 year olds who found themselves abruptly without adult supervision, at least one of whom is wholly a juvenile delinquent (it’s Edwin), and proceeded to run amok.
Like. They’re genuinely very very good at their job! And professional, most of the time! They're brilliant, and moral, and caring! They're good!
They are also two troublemaking kids who are spending eternity playing hooky to go on a joyride, in a car they very much stole, and that neither of them has a real (not from a comic) license to drive. And they will very much be vandalizing their enemies’ houses on the way, and it is not only possible but probable that the night will end with flooring it to run from the cops.
They lived lives of intense suppression and restriction and then suddenly realized they had no one to answer to but each other, Edwin's going to Hell either way and no cop or security camera can see them, no one can yell or punish them, and if someone tries they can yell and hit right back, they can finally do what they want, and now, well... Edwin steals evidence from police stations without even hesitating and 'trespassing' is a concept relevant only to vampires and squares.
And I LOVE that.
Kind of love the idea of Charles having the best friend from the Edwardian times equivalent of a parent’s toddler language decoder
Like Edwin says something in posh, flowery, old people language and everyone in the room who isn’t ancient is like the fuck is he talking about??? and Charles is just nodding along because he understood every bit of it even though that statement was at least three times longer than it needed to be

charles rowland, dying and delirious, sits across a table in an attic that will become his tomb, staring up at the most beautiful boy he's ever seen
he's bathed in warmth and light and charles asks him if he's an angel
edwin's all oh no. far from it and charles says I think you are. you look like one
it takes at least a couple weeks into their ghost adventures before charles can be convinced otherwise
some days he's still not entirely sure
charles slowly realizing his feelings for edwin is great, but i now propose: charles realizes his feelings practically immediately after edwin's confession but now thinks it's awkward to tell him so soon so he just waits but gets increasingly worse at hiding it
