Southgate Estate, Runcorn New Town (1967-76) by James Stirling

Housing estate for Runcorn New Town designed by James Stirling and built in two phases between 1967 and 1976. The estate had 1,500 homes in a combination of flats and terraced housing. The buildings were constructed of precast concrete panels often clad with bright plastic panels.

As with many large scale estates in the 1980′s, upkeep and renovation was minimal which led to a death spiral of problems. The estate was demolished between 1990 and 1992 and replaced with another housing scheme.
