thunder-struck seawater: who were you before you named yourself? wine-dark & saturated
with your own roaring magic.
“You’re not old, Ethan.” Xavy looked up from his phone to give him a doubtful stare. Unless Ethan was a century old vampire then he highly doubted the other man’s attempt to make himself feel old. "Hmmm… That’s a shame.” This was one of the those rare cases where too much posting could actually be useful for everyone. Xavy was sure there ought to be one person in school who must have done that throughout the missing sixteen months. “Aren’t you the least bit curious? Maybe someone made a post or something about what we all can’t remember?”
“have you seen the general population of this school? i’m 25, which is approximately three weeks away from me retiring whenever alaric does.” sometimes ethan felt a little twinge of guilt, referring to alaric by first name in front of the students. he hoped ric didn’t see it as a disrespect thing, but he also kind of didn’t care. his actions said enough, right? “i’m ancient compared to you youths.” ethan listened to xavier and simply offered him a large shrug. “i feel like i’ve talked to more people in the past week than i ever have, trying to find stuff out. a big ol’ nada.”

He spent probably too long trying to recall the exact science of beer making, wasn’t it like, yeast? It was escaping him. So much so that he genuinely startled for a moment as Ethan flashed in and out, grinning widely. “Look at you, skills galore. Saving us precious time. Dig in, dude.” He unpacked the cartons of chinese, snapping apart the wooden chopsticks drumming them on the tabletop. “C’mon, you love me, no denying it. Plus don’t you miss it at all? It hasn’t been that long.”
.
“absolutely, man. there has to be some good out of all of this.” he wasn’t really big on the whole talking about feelings thing. but jamie was a good dude. one of the best ethan knew. and he’d never had any trouble talking to him before, so he was forcing himself not to let this be any different. even if the lump in his throat said otherwise. “clearly, i love you, otherwise i wouldn’t have subjected you to my horrifying excuse for a man cave. and yeah, fine. i do miss wickery. like, way more than i’m proud to admit.”
“Oh, right. Maybe it was.” Hope had almost forgotten that he’d well, died. She remembered Ethan in that off handed sort of haze most upperclassmen had when you were younger. He’d been a witch, he played sports if she remembered correctly, and that was about the most she could give you. “Seems like everyone is playing Clue these days between old instagram quotes and vague subtweets of the last year. Probably sucks, yeah?.”
.
“this is bullshit. i mean, all of it, but. i’m so good at clue. i’ve always hated losing.” ethan snickered, mostly to himself. at the very least, hope was easy to talk to. she understood better than anyone else how absolutely batshit their lives were. even if she was usually at the center of it all. or maybe because of that? he didn’t know. “unfortunately, my thirst traps do not give a solid timeline of anything.”
“his lack of ability to actually retain any knowledge of something technical that’s not the workings of a crossbow is astonishing, imagine if he just used an iPad for research?” the brunette contemplated. “it’s kind of nice that people who got here during those sixteen months barely don’t know my name now to be honest,” josie admitted, “it must be really difficult for you guys though, learning everyone’s names all the time, not sure how you do it,” she chuckled lightly.
“not to call your dad a boomer, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he thought using an iPad for research meant that the enemy could see it too.” who was the enemy? ethan didn’t know. it usually varied from week to week. “yeah. you get a chance to, like. control your narrative, or whatever? those same kids don’t even know how awesome i used to be at magic, so. sucks for them.”

“Oh.” His face couldn’t help but show disappointment. Then again, he didn’t know why expected more from someone who’s a… Xavy gave the previous-witch-now-turned-vampire once over. Well, someone who’s an Ethan. He figured it’d be best to just leave it as just that. “I never had Facebook,” Xavy mumbled as he went through his phone. “All I have are text messages.” He skimmed through his messages briefly. He’ll probably need more time to get through a whole year of messages, even with the little social circle that he had. Looking at his phone, it didn’t seeem that that part of his life changed either.
“yeah, i had everything once upon a time. but now i’m old and don’t understand kids and their apps and their slang. oh god, i’m turning into my parents. great.” ethan ran a hand through his hair. “nothing’s coming across as super useful right now, though.” he assumed deleting stuff was just, like. a part of life. or maybe reinventing himself when he got turned? ethan had no idea. but it didn’t really matter. it’s not like he would have made a status about bloodlust. “i need to go through texts, but it seems like a lot of those are pointless too.” ethan, be less vapid challenge.
“i don’t know, both seem possible and likely…” josie shook her head, chuckling softly, “dad is hopeless like that, i have had to teach him to turn on the apple tv countless times,” she mused happily. the light conversation was welcomed; sure ethan seemed sort of frustrated to not be completely sure who was in those pictures on his phone, but still. “if they’re still here you should see them around?” josie suggested, “it’s weird to think people may have come and gone and we have no idea.”
“that’s fair. who amongst us hasn’t shown him how to do something every major iOS update?” ethan managed a smile, thankful that — if nothing else — alaric’s total technologic illiteracy was enough to save him from spiraling right now. “i mean, yeah. at some point, i’m sure i will. but with the expansion and everything, it seems like there’s about a billion more students here. and i’m basically getting to know an entire new faction. super cool times.”
Hope grimaced, taking in the image once more. “Pretty sure chlorine green is like, murky and gross looking. She looks like she swallowed a highlighter. Maybe a witch spelled it or something. Wouldn’t be the first time.” The girl gestured down the hall, where the faculty offices remained. “Don’t you have access to like, the student portals or files? I’m sure you more than anyone could narrow it down if it’s bugging you that much.”
.
“you’re right. maybe someone did spell it. hell, maybe it was me,” he muttered under his breath, looking back at the date on the photo. if only ethan had any idea when he became a vampire. jesus, how morbid. he didn’t even know when he died. fuckin’ a. “no one would suspect the person guilty to selfie it out, right?” he didn’t know why he would have even bothered to spell the girl’s hair, if it was him, but hey. he’d done dumber things for no reason. but now he was a responsible adult who also couldn’t practice magic, so. who fucking knew? “okay, yeah. sure. maybe. but where’s the fun in that?” also, ethan hadn’t even thought that far ahead, but whatever.
“Apparently it is beer that has been scienced to taste better. Though i’m pretty sure the girl who makes it runs a coven adjacent book club so I can’t vouch for how much actual science is involved.” He rattles off, walking in and setting the bags down on the desktop. “Figured everything has been so damn hectic it’d be nice to chill, catch up.” Check in too, but he doubted Ethan would appreciate so much concern being thrown his way over his new state of life. Or er, unlife? “I’m also trying to bribe you into helping me judge tryouts next week.”
.
“isn’t beer already scienced just to exist? i feel like i distinctly remember that being the thing that caught fourteen year old me’s attention in biology class. something something, this cycle is how beer is made. oh, watch this.” ethan grinned and vamped to the kitchen and back with plates, napkins, utensils. he posed for jamie when he was back. “ah? cool, right?” as though a third of the school couldn’t do the same trick. he was just trying to find the silver lining. “if you’re trying to get me drunk, all you had to do was ask.” ethan playfully hit his shoulder, his mouth forming an over-exaggerated surprise. “oh, bribery. got it. you’re lucky i like you.”
elliot recognized the photo, he had the same one but from a slightly different angle on his phone. it was the two of them, ethan was laughing elliot had just flipped the hood of a hoodie up and pulled on the strings, closing the fabric around his nose. his version of the image was taken a few seconds earlier, showing off his face. “no idea,” he lied, shrugging and taking a sip of his coffee.
ethan glanced at the boy in front of him. he’d woken up next to him when they realized that everyone had collectively forgotten a year, but ever since then, it seemed like elliot had been avoiding him. two could play at that game. “weird.” a part of him was just goin to leave well enough alone, but something told him to keep prodding. “you know what else i found on my phone? i’ll give you a hint, i’m staring right at him.” his lips pressed in a tight line. “like, a lot. selfies, pictures of just you — i’m an awesome photographer, by the way — dumb snapchat memories antics.”

Xavier looked up to see what Ethan was showing him. “I have no clue, man. If you don’t remember meeting them then I probably don’t know them too.” He looked at the selfie again. It looked so ordinary. As if it belonged perfectly on the phone and yet it was also a reminder that everyone around them lost an entire year of memories.
Wait… A reminder…
Xavier palmed his own forehead for not thinking about it earlier. He whipped out his own phone and started looking though it. “What else have you found on your phone? Maybe there’s something that could help you figure out what happened for you?”
“you’re right.” he watched the kid smack his face, and ethan was about to voice his concern when the younger male spoke up. “hm? oh. i mean, just a lot of selfies. a couple instagram thirst traps, whoopsies, some tweets that mean absolutely nothing out of context.” ethan clicked through apps. he’d checked it all before, but it didn’t hurt to skim again. “apparently deleted facebook in that time. which, honestly? good for past me.”
“i wouldn’t trust my dad to be the technical genius on campus,” josie deadpanned, shuddering, “the fact that it’s working at all is a miracle,” she laughed softly, quietly under her breath as josie leaned in to look at the photo, “i don’t know,” she confirmed, frowning, “i don’t think they’re a witch, if they were i should at least recognise them as a member of the faction,” the brunette confirmed, leaning back once again.
“that’s a valid point,” he admitted. ethan stopped to think for a second. “i’m pretty sure i had to teach him the iphone a few years back, or . . . reteach? it’s hard to tell.” he grinned, going back to his camera roll to see if there were any other faces that little josie could help him with. well — little josie was basically an adult now. weird how time worked. “what about . . . ” ethan glanced from his phone, back to josie. “nevermind. this is pointless.”
Hope was more than a bit turned around, and now had reached the point where finding the new registrar seemed like an impossible feat. She’d settle for a semi recognizable face at this point, or at least one she was willing to speak to. But at the sound of a question posed her way, she’d turned, glancing down at the phone in mild amusement. “I think that’s Brenna. Vampire, usually nice. But her hair isn’t normally that highlighter green color so what do I know? Maybe she’s new. Not like we’d know the difference.”
.
“brenna,” he repeated, as if saying the name out loud was going to magically make him remember her. or anything. nope. no dice. “i mean, i know that i didn’t chill with the vampires when i was a student here, but she definitely doesn’t ring a bell.” ethan zoomed in on the picture, then zoomed back out. “yeah, what’s up with the hair color? isn’t that what happens when you go swimming with blonde hair?”
He’d have knocked, honestly. If not for the six pack and takeout order residing in his hands. The week from a walking hell, and he’d managed to piece enough together for his sanity. He was back now, he assistant coached now. Ethan was here too, sweet. He could work out more in time, they certainly had enough of it now. The wolf felt like he needed to sleep a month, or drown in carbs. A draw for now, but his head fell forward to thud against the doorframe. Voice muffled, he called out. “Open the door Hayashi. I have beer. Its artisanal. No saying no to that.” @ethantm
.
ethan was still navigating this misery, new and improved and suddenly immortal. he didn’t understand in what world he would have become a vampire, let alone accept the transition. but apparently some weird shit went down in that year that led him here. fucking a. the one perk he’d found so far? vamp speed. which he used to go from his bed to the door as soon as jamie knocked. or — “did you use your head?” he asked, laughing as he noticed the wolf’s arms were full. “what the hell is artisanal beer?” ethan stepped aside to let jamie in.
“awesome,” ethan mumbled under his breath. his thumb was sliding through his phone, mindlessly scrolling to keep himself from going off the deep end. “nice to know ric didn’t bother to update the wifi in the past year.” he was still trying to make sense of it all. the not knowing frustrated him to no end, but ethan was doing what he did best: deflect with humor. “hey. any idea who this is?” he asked the nearest student, pointing to the other person in a selfie on his phone.

(darren barnet, cis male, he/him) ripped jeans and denim jackets, waiting to see how long until you break, forcing a smile to be a good example, a shattered pair of rose-colored glasses; — ☾ welcome to the salvatore school, ETHAN HAYASHI. i hope you’re ready for a memorable school year assisting with HERBOLOGY. Ever miss those days with the VAMPIRE faction? at only 24/25, it’s easy to be BITTER and DEFENSIVE, but we know you to be CHARISMATIC and GREGARIOUS.
wooooo intro #2!!! this is... significantly longer and for that i apologize
growing up he was your typical all-american boy next door, little league champ
age fourteen he found out he was a witch after he almost blew up a bus on a field trip
packed up and moved to the salvatore school where he thrived for the next four years
once he graduated, he had a mostly normal college experience — barring that time he told his then-boyfriend that he was a witch, but they were drunk and the guy thought he was a magician
ethan got a degree in education and alaric hooked him up with a substitute teacher position at mystic falls high
he didn’t have anywhere to go after college, and alaric had been as much of a father figure to him as his own, and it all sort of fell into place perfectly
DURING THE MISSING YEAR: alaric sent out letters of interest to graduates for the fledgling research and teaching assistant program that the salvatore school was starting, and ethan jumped at the opportunity
he alternated back and forth between subbing at mystic falls high and teaching herbology to students at the salvatore school. it was tough but he did it!
and then disaster struck. a monster attacked the school, he got severely injured protecting some of the younger kids.
foolishly, he allowed himself to be healed with vampire blood. he needed to get back on his feet, and he was cocky enough to think nothing bad could happen.
joke’s on him! against alaric’s advice, he drove home that night (he had a dog to feed, after all). but a deer ran out into the road and he swerved to avoid hitting it, heading headfirst into a tree on the side of the road.
when he woke up in a totaled car a few hours later, ethan knew something was incredibly wrong. he called ric, who found him in a ditch, and they talked over his options.
ethan was set to let his twenty-four hours go peacefully and die as nature intended, because what self-respecting witch would become a vampire? but alaric convinced (read: guilted) him to complete the transition, because there were kids back at the school depending on him. e hated the idea, but he was vulnerable, and alaric would never lead him astray, right?
so he went back to the school, quit his job at the high school, and began full time as a teaching assistant there.
PRESENT DAY: all things considered, ethan’s done a pretty good job at keeping control as a vampire. very stable. not emotionally, but like. bloodlust.
since he can’t remember the past year, he cannot figure out how the hell he is a vampire and why he would have completed the transition. sounds fake. the simulation is broken.
he gives off massive himbo energy (i mean... look at him...) but he’s actually very smart. we love dimensions. he’s not just a pretty face.
can come across as very petty and sarcastic at times, but he’s truly friendly and he’s generally optimistic when it’s not about his own life
lowkey? looking up ways to get his magic back, or to reverse engineer the heretic process. do i envision this ending well for him? no ❤️ but i cannot wait to see how this turns out!
