I actually disagree with this a lot. Things aren’t a money grab or inorganic just because they’re new, and wanting to up his production value and have more structure to the liveshows isn’t inherently a bad thing. 

Before liveshows went away people complained nonstop that Phil’s solo shows were just him shouting out fans and talking about food. Those were genuine complaints. I’m not saying that he changed his format because of those complaints, because I don’t think that’s true. I just think fans get into a trap of romanticizing what the ‘ideal’ content is and that ideal content ends up being things that are exhausting for Phil (and Dan, since ideal = joint for most people) and probably really nerve wracking. 

Phil’s actually out here saying he’s gonna be going live on YouNow weekly after a year and a half of no solo liveshows, almost ten months of no live shows at all. A break like that is the perfect time for him to have tried to think of ways to make reconnecting with us (which this is still) and also keeping his sanity go hand in hand a bit more. This kind of set up means that when there’s nothing going on in their lives that he wants to share he still can do a liveshow and have content, and it means he doesn’t have to spend the entire hour dodging questions he can’t answer and just saying hi to group chats over and over. I think that has potential to be way more interesting. 

Insuring his comfort by making sure he has some structure won’t take away from him telling us what he wants to share (and what he would have told us with the old liveshow format), it would just help with the moments where he feels pressured by us to talk about things he doesn’t want to. Instead of anxiously looking for a topic to talk about and leaving people upset by how disingenuous it all feels, he’s insuring his comfort by creating a structure that’ll help with those moments, leaving him the option of avoiding talking about personal things when he doesn’t want to do that (and of course, allowing him to talk about the things he does want to talk about!)
