the sea has pulled him under. thick foam occupies his lungs and the cold bites at his skin. kelp tickles him right before he thinks this is it, this is the time. but when his vision starts to blur at the corners, and the darkness whisper to call him, he hears a voice:

and no matter how many times he has this exact dream, he always wakes with a startle. gulps down air as if he had actually been in the water, like he's trying to take back the breath that had been stolen from him.
he's restless after that. rises out of his bed as if he has a mission. he roams through the home, fingers trailing across the door jambs as if to ward away whatever's haunting him. he watches through the window like he hasn't already memorized the land around himβmaybe he's missed something. maybe that's what bothers him.
but that's not it.
there's no answers, no matter where he looks.
it's still just him. still just the lighthouse. still just the sea, and the dream that inhabits his mind, still the soft tug that keeps him from fully submerging.
