Life was supposed to be good. Max has Chloe back in her life again, but can't shake the feeling that someone is still missing. Arcadia Bay is back, but is it really the same place anymore? And as their time on the road comes to end, Max and Chloe end up in Pittsburgh and are faced with the same dilemma that split them up the first time: can they settle down?
Life was never going to simple. Max has a vision of a future murder with an unknown victim. The Overlight continues to bind Chloe and Safi together. The world at large has begun to suspect that Arcadia Bay might not have always been there. The consequences of all of Max's good intentions are finally coming to collect to the debt.

Max hardly remembered actually being led into the rest stop bathroom. One moment she was outside, then the next she was washing away blood as Chloe washed it off her face next to her.
The blood ran dark off her fingers. It swirled in the bathroom sink, almost black as it twisted into the drain. Something tugged at her heart as she watched it disappear. It felt like she was losing something she was meant to keep. Even though it wasn't real yet, it was still evidence that Safi had touched her. Or that she will. In two years, give or take.
“Oh shit, Safi,” Max said.
“Yeah, I know. I'll deal with her later. Are you alright?”
“No. I mean yes. I don't know. Safi, she-”
Was it so wrong that her first thought was that the red looked good on Chloe?
Chloe had washed away most of the blood from her face, but it still lingered on her neck. Whenever she moved, droplets of it that had fallen on her shoulder caught the light. Max felt nearly transfixed by the splash of crimson on Chloe's skin, same as she had with her future Safi.
Everything she saw flashed in her mind again. It was as real as any memory, but it hadn't happened yet. No matter how many times she'd seen a future and taken the memory of it back into the past, she could never get used to the feeling. Thinking of it was such a gruesome task. Every step of the way her brain fought to forget it, like it was a contagion.
All the color was drained from Chloe's face. Recognition and realization collided for her. It looked like it pained her just to ask, as if the asking would make it real.
“What did you see?”
“It’s Safi. I think Safi is going to do something bad.”

since becoming a barista i have noticed a few very distinct typologies among my customers. such as:
the woke left: young and fashionable. visible tattoos. often enjoys matcha, lavender flavoring, oat milk, and cold foam. pretty decent customers.
sweet old man: drinks very sweet iced lattes, pays in cash, puts all of his change in the tip jar. sometimes orders hot coffee and i get scared that his shaky old man hands will spill it and he'll get burned but that has not yet happened and god willing never shall.
evil old man: only wants drip coffee and declares it ridiculous that any other form of coffee exists. some variants only want americanos and these variants are even scarier. watch out.
sweet old woman: might need her daughter's help to order but is very bubbly and open to trying new things. compliments baristas freely and frequently.
evil old woman: does not want coffee and only wants sweet tea or soda. will not tip even if she spends three hours in the shop repeatedly asking baristas to fetch things for her.
errand husband: either stiltedly recites an order to you or shows you the order in their texts/notes app. needs to step out of line and make a phone call if you ask any follow-up questions.
grindset girlie: always wearing scrubs, an apron, and/or a name tag. orders the exact same thing every day and knows the exact change she'll need to pay for it. her regular order is both extremely caffeinated and extremely sweet.
#mamabear: is actively wrangling two to four children while ordering. order changes repeatedly because the children cannot decide if they want a muffin or a cookie or apple juice or chocolate milk etc. for some reason these women are always wearing an article of clothing or carrying some personalized item that says "mama" on it.
schoolchildren: band of two to eight adolescents hanging out after school. extremely indecisive but generally quite polite and tip well.
amnesiac in love: grown adult who needs their partner to tell them what they like. gets asked a question about their own preferences and turns to their partner to answer for them. generally acts like a shy child looking to their guardian for behavioral cues if you try to interact with them and only wants to talk to mommy i mean their wife.
this of course is not an exhaustive list but those are just some of the most consistent Types i get. ok bye xoxo

I think one of the gentlest things in the world is when a friend just gets your weird little brain. like you say half a sentence and they finish it. you reference something incredibly niche from seven years ago and they’re already nodding. they understand your strange vocabulary for emotions that don’t have real words yet. it’s being seen and known and still loved. maybe especially because you’re known. god. what a gift.
