“Well, I was just going to stand here but since you spoke to me I guess we’re stuck in this conversation.”

Say what you will, but I didn’t think the movie was all that bad. 

“I mean, I guess it wasn’t bad if you like movies like that.”

“This is actually making me want to go to prom now.”

“I can’t say if anyone in my class did anything crazy like that at prom because I skipped out. But I think going to prom covered in blood sounds like the best option.”

Henry sighed, setting the box down gently, and pulling out the smallest kitten of the litter. She was by not means a runt, but she was still much smaller than her older brothers and sisters.

“Oh. I on’t have to hold her but she’s lovely.They all are quite...cute.” Logic had suddenly slipped out of her brain. “We can’t take them all but two? I think we could manage 2.” The reply she’d given had surprised herself.

“Not enough room.” He’d heard that line enough today. Everyone said that. People who had plenty of space said that. People who didn’t say that said they had no time. What were they doing that was so important? Lives were on the line, and all they could think about were themselves? Disgusting. The entire town was disgusting. The entire human race was disgusting. Why had God not launched them all off into the vacuum of space yet?

Esperanza glanced behind herself, looking back at her loud, crazy little family. Maybe a cat would be a welcome addition to the family. Pets brought people together, didn’t they? In a way that was better than arguing, she’d assumed. And secretly, well, secretly she had always wanted a cat.

The last thing Esperanza was expecting to hear was a knock on the apartment door. Her sisters were helping clean up with dinner and Esperanza had been trying to work up the courage to follow her father to his ‘study’ and attempt to have an important talk. The knock was her savior from her own half baked plan, 

“I-I’m fine. Really. I’m fine. Sorry. Uhm- How are you?”

“I’m fine. This is what fine looks like.” Esperanza replied, gesturing to herself. “What’s the matter, really?”

“I guess so, but only in this case. It’s just a little fishy everything that happened that preceded his death like writing her out of the will, talking about a divorce and her being mega-pissed he didn’t take the gig at Lollapalooza, which was worth millions.” 

“I suppose but it’s not really my business. I usually ignore the affairs of celebrities. Or conspiracies about their death. It’s sad, sure, but it’s over. It happened and...Well, time to move on. “

“Oh, but the pig’s blood is what makes it fun.”

“Personally, I’d love the telekinesis more than anything. But if you come to prom covered in pig’s blood...Well, that’ll be one unforgettable night.”

“On record, yes, it says he shot himself but the circumstances that surrounded the situation with Courtney point in a different direction.”

“Oh. So, you’re one of those conspiracy theorists? I don’t really buy into any of that sensationalist stuff. It’s sort of shitty to blame the woman--like the whole ‘Yoko Ono broke up The Beatles’--I just don’t buy into it.”

“It’s fucking ridiculous. It’s been, what, a week? And already I’m feeling vaguely homicidal. I’m gonna end up killing someone by the end of this, I swear.

“Planning on going all ‘Carrie’ at the prom? Hopefully without the pigs blood. And try not to destroy the entire town.”

“Well, prom is not only about underage drinking and teenage pregnancy you know? Prom can also be the night where friends get together and tag along, but if someone spikes the punch then I guess you’re probably right. Another one bad thing about what I’m saying is that most of what you said is true.”

“I guess it all depends on the person. Honestly, prom was never my thing even when I was in high school. A waste of time and money. I actually still dread prom season, so I’ll be happy when it’s all over.”

“That’s the spirit.”

“Well, I can only hope Lucia keeps up the good work.” Esperanza chuckled, shaking her head. “Anyway, what are your prom plans?”

“Ha, I wish. As much fun as it is watching everyone I hate be even more stupid than usual, it gets a bit nauseating after about a day of it.”

“I didn’t even like prom season when I was in high school. Spending way too much money on a dress you only wear once and watching everyone turn into complete idiots over a silly dance? It gets old fast.”

“Level with me, what do you think happened to Kurt Cobain?”

“He killed himself. Isn’t that a well known fact?”
