I like to imagine when summer roles around Kalim will have to explain the whole like. He’s been letting Jamil use hypnosis on him for years and that he doesn’t want him to receive any punishment because he kinda blames himself a little bit and he wants what’s best for Jamil, so he should be left alone. I think his dad would just laugh at him. This is the same guy who watched Kalim crash out about Jamil for essentially all of middle school and then throw up and beg to follow him to magic school. And then he hears on top of it all Kalim has been letting his… um… object of affection hypnotize him? Hilarious. Kinda kinky. His kid has managed to prove time and time again he’s even more fucked up abt this servant than previously thought possible.

Deuce Spade - Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief, Rick Riordan

As alluded to in game, I have found it to be heavily implied that Deuce has learning and reading difficulties. Therefore, I thought he would best enjoy a book meant for teens/tweens. The Percy Jackson series would definitely be something Deuce would like. I feel that he would probably admire Percy and Percy’s mindset, as well as the driving plot of the first book being Percy’s desire to save his mother. Deuce would see similarities between Percy’s love and devotion to his single mom, as well as Percy’s delinquent behavior to himself, making him fully engaged in the story.

Trey Clover - Life of Pi, Yann Martel

Trey was difficult for me to figure out, but I think that he would enjoy historical fiction quite a bit. Besides Life of Pi, I could also see him enjoying When the Emperor was Divine by Julie Otsuka. Trey’s unique magic allows him to change something’s appearance, taste, etc. In Life of Pi, Pi imagines the other people stuck on the boat with him as animals. In my mind, Trey is another person who isn’t too interested in fantasy, but rather enjoys more intellectual novels. Life of Pi has a lot of emotional turmoil that I think Trey would really enjoy reading.

Cater Diamond - Oshi No Ko, Aka Akasaka

To me, Cater also seems like the type of person to prefer manga to actual novels. Oshi No Ko felt like the perfect choice to me, because on the surface it feels like a bright, colorful and trendy sort of manga (perfect for the upkeep of his persona) but actually gets into some darker topics and themes that would interest Cater more. Oshi No Ko also delves into the topics of lying, stage presence, and personas. Reading about that sort of thing would probably make Cater almost a little uncomfortable with how close it hits to home, but simultaneously engage him in a more personal manner.

Leona Kingscholar - The History of the Ancient World, Susan Wise Bauer

I can’t remember where it was stated, maybe in a birthday vignette, but Leona likes translating and reading ancient texts in ancient languages. I would give him a history book of our world’s ancient civilizations written in English, and then a Japanese-to-English dictionary for him to use to translate. Leona is someone who I feel like gets easily bored with fictional books because he’s intelligent enough to predict the plot. He’s also someone who does have a passion for learning, if only it wasn’t so buried under his self-esteem issues and depression. Given the chance, I think he would absolutely love (although he wouldn’t admit it) to have a chance to learn of our world’s ancient history, as well as pick up a new language.

Ruggie Bucchi - Black Clover, Yuki Tabata

Another character who I think enjoys casually reading instead of longer novels. Ruggie seems like the type to get bored with more intellectual-based novels especially when the story really gets into social or economic issues of the world. I’d bet that Ruggie would say he’d rather deal with the issues he faces ‘irl’ rather than read about it in a book. Black Clover does definitely get into real-world issues, many of which I am sure Ruggie could relate to, but the overall vibe of the manga is less serious. For some reason, Ruggie also just gives me the vibe that he would enjoy this manga. It’s got some interesting fantasy elements but it isn’t so fantastical that it would seem absurd to a guy who lives in a magical world.

Jack Howl - Holes, Louis Sachar

A direct juxtaposition to Ruggie, I think Jack really likes to read fictional novels that revolve around real-world socioeconomic issues. Holes is a slightly more childish novel but I think Jack would find the premise interesting. I find that Jack is one of the only characters among the cast to have a rigid moral code, and he also has a strong sense of justice. Because of that, I thought that books like Holes or How to Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee would interest him with both their implicit and explicit dialogue into social inequities. Jack is definitely the type of guy to actually enjoy the novels that are in the school curriculum. Unlike Ace, he actually reads them.

Azul Ashengrotto - Win Every Argument, Mehdi Hasan.

There’s no way to deny it, Azul is totally one of those toxic guys who reads psychology books and self-improvement books just to use the information to manipulate other people. As Azul is based on Ursula, I thought that he would be particularly interested in the art of persuasion, hence a book on how to win every argument. In Book 3, as well as many other moments, it is shown that Azul is very insecure about himself, and has placed a strict routine on himself to constantly be at the top of his game. I can see him secretly enjoying fictional novels, especially science fiction and mystery, but outwardly condemning them as a waste of time.

Jade Leech - Project Hail Mary, Andy Weir

I know for a fact that Jade loves science fiction, especially when the focus is flora and fauna. Project Hail Mary seemed like the perfect choice due to its focus on a new microorganism and its dire effects on all of humankind. The novel also goes into a surprising amount of detail into the scientific endeavors of the Grace, which would also interest Jade greatly. In my head, I think that Jade, like Floyd, actually really enjoys action-packed fiction rather than other genres like historical fiction. But, because Jade has a reputation, he rarely voices his taste. Also Jade would probably secretly hope that Grace fails and the Astrophage destroys humanity because he’s just sadistic like that.

Floyd Leech - Chainsaw Man, Tatsuki Fujimoto

Floyd would LOVE Chainsaw Man. He would find it hilarious and would love the gory bits. Floyd would almost relate with Denji’s unrestrained tendency for violence while in his chainsaw form. I don’t think Floyd reads for anything except his temporary, mindless enjoyment. Floyd would get bored too easily, which is why a manga with constant conflict and absurdity is the best bet. I also see Floyd as someone who doesn’t pick up a book unless he has to, and he would much prefer a manga over something without any pictures. That being said, I do think that Floyd would pick up on the subtleties in Chainsaw Man as he is very smart.

Kalim Al-Asim - The Phantom Tollbooth, Norton Juster

Kalim feels like the type of guy who doesn’t want to read a book that’s too serious. He probably only reads casually for his own enjoyment, but sitting down and focusing on a book for long periods of time isn’t really his thing. The Phantom Tollbooth would be a book that Kalim would like because of how strange and fun it is. I think he would read this book and then want to read it again to his siblings. Kalim is someone who enjoys life and the vibe from The Phantom Tollbooth has the same sentiment of a boy learning how to live and understand life more joyfully and to a fuller extent.

Jamil Viper - Fullmetal Alchemist, Hiromu Arakawa

Jamil definitely likes both full novels and manga. However, I would think that Jamil probably doesn’t have time to sit down and really read a long intellectual novel that he would like. Also, it’s probably less stressful to open up a manga rather than a full-blown book after a long exhausting day (personal experience). Fullmetal Alchemist felt like the perfect pick because it is very plot driven and coherent without being a hard read. It’s easy to understand and the plot and fights within the manga are enjoyable without being mindless. Jamil needs some time to relax and reading a manga is just it. ((Did I end up giving all the basketball club boys mangas? Yes, yes I did))

Vil Schoenheit - Scythe, Neal Shushterman

Vil was also a tricky one to come up with, and so I just went on vibes again. Vil would probably enjoy all sorts of book genres as long as they were well-written. Scythe is an amazing novel and it covers a lot of interesting topics. Vil would probably like to wrestle with the concepts of death and aging (especially after his experience in Book 6). Also the concept of becoming young again would intrigue him. Another inference I’m making off vibes here is that Vil would probably like those sort of science fiction books that take place in a utopia. Vil cares for perfection and improvement so much that he would be drawn to books that turn that concept on its head by pointing out issues in these fictional utopias.

Rook Hunt - The Phantom of the Opera, Gaston Leroux

Rook is such a romantic, there was no way I could recommend any sort of book that DIDN’T include some romantic themes. Honestly, Rook would love any sort of novel, but a classic romance with a love triangle, as well as the intrigue of a phantom would draw him in. And if he learned that there was a musical? Oh yeah, he’s a goner for sure. Additionally, I can see him liking novels that were written less recently as I can see him enjoying the writing style of older authors. Rook has stuck out to me as someone who actively looks to read classics and acclaimed novels due to his interest in finding beauty in everything. He would probably wax on and on about the nostalgia of books written in the 1800’s or 1900’s. 

Epel Felmier - The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, C.S. Lewis

Another person who doesn’t really pick up a book for fun. Epel is very outdoorsy and sporty, I don’t think his first choice of activity is reading. I think that Epel would like the entire Narnia series, but because The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is the most iconic and well-known, I would give him that first. I also think he would think of the Witch as Vil when he was reading lol. Again, if Epel is picking up a book to read, he wouldn’t want to have to think too hard to enjoy it. There’s a decent amount of action in the novel, as well as a nicely built storyline. I think Epel would look up to Peter a little bit, although he wouldn’t admit it, as well as Aslan. The second he reads about a talking lion he thinks it’s Leona and then he’s basically just using the book as roleplay between his two superiors haha.

Idia Shroud - One Piece, Eiichiro Oda

Is there any reason to explain? Idia is an otaku through and through and giving him One Piece seemed like the best option. It is probably one of the most well-known mangas nowadays and it’s an extremely interesting premise that Idia would enjoy. Idia probably reads through manga really fast so the sheer volume of volumes (get it) would entertain him for a while. One Piece is just such a classic I can’t see him not enjoying it. It’s a classic ‘hero on a journey’ where each island has a bigger and badder villain while all simultaneously connecting together throughout the series that he would be hooked. Idia would definitely start analyzing all the power ranks and hierarchies of the Devil Fruits and of Haki, yeah One Piece is the best for him.

Ortho Shroud - The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

As a robot, I don’t think that Ortho would be particularly interested in a non-fiction book. He knows quite a lot of things, and even if he got a chance to learn about a new world, I think he would be more interested in reading our stories. Especially after Book 6, Ortho would be trying to understand the true human Ortho and what it means to really be a person instead of maintaining his identity as a robot copy. Ortho still very much has a childish side to him, and I think the writing style of The Little Prince would suit him quite well. The novel is almost a little bit childish but it also covers a lot of different human topics. It is quite an instructionary tale. I can see Ortho liking any story that covers the concept of love, not necessarily romantic love, but familial, platonic love.

Malleus Draconia - Frankenstein, Mary Shelley

Malleus is someone who is not up to date with certain things, and as such, I found that Malleus probably prefers older literature. Frankenstein seemed like the right pick mainly for its central theme being ‘man vs. monster’. Malleus is often seen as someone scary and unfriendly, a monster. Reading a novel that flips the idea of who the monster truly is within a narrative would greatly intrigue him. Frankenstein would also fit with his taste for older literature. I can see Malleus relating to the wretch quite a bit, such as the being’s desire for companionship, love, and a family. While he would relate to the wretch quite a bit, I know that the varying sides of the story would make him ponder the topic a lot.

Lilia Vanrouge - Soul Eater, Atsushi Ohkubo

Lilia has been around for so long, I think that he is no longer interested in classical literature. He read it all when it was still fresh off the print. Lilia seems to enjoy modern conveniences, so I think he would like manga a lot. Soul Eater felt like the right vibe for him. It is a little bit on the older side of manga and its theme would interest Lilia. Lilia is very familiar with weapons, so the idea that these weapons are also ‘people’ in some sense would entertain him as a novel idea. I can see Lilia wanting to read alongside someone else, maybe Silver. I see him as someone who likes to share with others, especially those who he considers family, so reading a manga that he finds so interesting with someone else would make him quite happy.

Silver Vanrouge - The Eyes of the Dragon, Stephen King

This book would initially interest Silver due to ‘dragon’ being in the title, just because Malleus is such a huge component of Silver’s life. While I think he initially picks it up thinking its a book told from the perspective of a dragon, the story of treachery and betrayal would keep him hooked. After learning more about his past in Book 7, he might draw some connections between the characters in the book and his own history. In general, I can see Silver preferring more serious, mature books rather than YA novels. Since he falls asleep so often it probably takes him a long time to finish any book he reads, but overall he does enjoy reading quite a bit. I think that Silver finds it very relaxing, and he probably enjoys a wide genre of novels, as well as non-fiction.

Sebek Zigvolt  - The Iliad, Homer

There is no way that Sebek wouldn’t love The Iliad. I mean, come on. First of all, I think that Sebek would greatly enjoy all types of Greek stories, from fables to myths of the gods, to stories like The Iliad or The Odyssey. He would constantly compare the heroes in these tales to Malleus, but I also think that Sebek has a real soft spot for the classic hero tales. Sebek’s whole life has revolved around being a knight, so reading stories of heroes slaying monsters, protecting cities and the like would inspire him and fuel his determination to serve Malleus. Sebek would admire Achilles for his battle prowess, and I can see him being very interested in the battle logistics of the war as well.
