Namely, that unlike Ruby, Oz never had a team. And more specifically…

…Oz never had a PARTNER.

Basically, I think this volume is going show Weiss and her partnership become a KEY aspect of Ruby’s character arc. Show just what makes Weiss in particular so important and why she’ll likely be the biggest factor keeping Ruby from turning out like Ozma did.

For example, has anyone else noticed that last volume featured Ruby have close, heart-to-heart conversations with Blake and Yang?

However, neither of these conversations really ‘click’ for Ruby. Neither of them really drive her to truly open up and confront the real underlying problems Ruby is facing. Namely, her ever-more-compulsive and ever-more-self-destructive drive to help others and her general hero-complex.

So I’d say it only makes sense that there is a third conversation we’ve yet to see between Ruby and her one remaining teammate. The teammate who also just so happens to be her PARTNER. The conversation that Ruby desperately needs right now.

This is where I think we’re going to see what truly separates Ruby from Ozma, and what will ultimately keep her from repeating his mistakes: At the end of the day, Oz has always been alone, whether by circumstance or by consciously pushing others away.

Here’s a little Bee angst I can’t believe I didn’t notice for almost two years. When Ruby answers the door for Team JOYR Blake and Weiss are right beside her but by the time Yang has hugged Ruby and Weiss she’s backed away.

Poor girl has been so traumatized that she expects to be yelled at and and blamed for disagreeing with her partner.  That’s why this simple, beautiful gesture from Yang was so important. Just with a touch she told her that she wasn’t mad, didn’t blame her and that they can disagree and still love each other.

He was designed to heal and love his friends enough to move mountains, ready at a moment’s notice to throw himself in front of danger to literally shield them

Let's talk about Qrow. More specifically, let's talk about Qrow at the end of Volume 8.

Now, from what we've seen, no one quite knows how Summer died. Even Ruby and Yang, her own daughters, as well as Qrow, HER TEAMMATE AND HUSBAND/PARTNER/BEST FRIEND, don't know what happened to her. All they know is that she disappeared.

Now, can we talk about Qrow?

This poor man has just broken out of prison, after watching his lover/partner/friend die right in front of him. He doesn't know what's going on. He doesn't know if his nieces succeeded in stopping Salem.

And the first thing he sees upon breaking out of prison is Atlas falling.

He doesn't know about the portals. He doesn't know that Mantle was evacuated. He doesn't know that James fell with the city he worked so hard to 'protect'.

He doesn't know anything.

And I know that we've all talked about this before - we've all talked and mourned about how right at the end of the series, Qrow yells his nieces names into his earpiece, hoping to get a response, but receiving nothing.

But please consider what will happen next.

Qrow is going to get to Vacuo, praying desperately that Ruby and Yang and all the others somehow, miraculously, made it there safely. He's going to be met with Winter, Nora, Oscar and Ren.

He's going to be met with the news that his nieces, their partners and their friend, all fell.

This is a man who had to suffer through his lover/best friend/partner disappearing on a mission. This is a man who had to listen as they announced her killed in action, after months of searching and not finding a thing. This is a man who had to practically raise the girls he called nieces - Tai shut down, Raven was gone, so he was the only family they had.

And now his nieces are gone. Disappeared. And no one knows if they're dead or alive or something else completely.

Can you just imagine how he must be feeling?

This is Summer all over again. This is her disappearance on repeat, only this time, it's worse, because it isn't only one person he loves, it's TWO.

This is going to break him.

Qrow Branwen is the saddest character with the worst luck and the biggest heart in the entire series, and I don't think we talk enough about how Ruby and Yang falling is going to affect him.

If you see LGBTQ+ as a commodity to drive your popularity, as something that isn't real beyond how you profit and monetize it, as something that you shamelessly do not support, then this isn't your house.

LGBTQ+ persons, and any media that depicts them, do not exist for your gratification.
