I hate that Lestat only receives / seeks out comfort and attention when he’s at rock bottom. Children in emotionally neglectful situations often grow up with a deep sense of shame, especially around their own needs and emotions because they don’t feel like their needs matter. For Lestat, emotional care and affection (beyond sexual) are difficult to ask for and put him in an incredibly vulnerable and shameful place.

And shame is very often this unnamed thing that unravels connection - the fear that there might be something about me that if other people know it or see it that I won’t be worthy of love, of connection. But in order for connection to happen we have to allow ourselves to be seen and to be vulnerable. Vulnerability is the paradoxical core of shame and struggle for worthiness - but also the birthplace of joy and creativity and belonging.
