practicing self care less out of self love and more for the sheer logical reasoning of it’d be kinda stupid of me to expect myself to be able to function without proper maintenance
“oh i don’t deserve rest and relaxation, i haven’t done enough, i haven’t earned it” and my car’s breaks don’t deserve break fluid because they aren’t breaking well enough to earn it. that’s what you sound like!!!!!
i think the key difference between george lucas’s star wars and disney’s star wars is that lucas is a man with an ideology. someone with a point of view, and all that entails. which comes with ideas of revolution, anti-imperialism, challenging the status quo, cultural appropriation and racist stereotypes. complex and contradictory ideas because that’s how artists are: complex and complicated people. disney is not. disney is a corporation. a corporation can’t have ideology, because ideology defeats the purpose of profit. and when the only thing you do is to turn on the movie manufacturing machine before you sit down and plan what ideas are you trying to convey to the audience, then your results are going to be washed out corporate garbage. and because when you’re a giant corporation who only cares about selling to the widest audience possible, you can’t take sides. you can’t decide on an idea. because you want to sell your product to people who are on the entire political spectrum. which results in movies without ideology, without purpose, without soul.
I have been looking for this post for years after I came across it and it’s finally here and I need to reblog this because it is absolutely and entirely accurate.
#as I always say: lucas was making a samurai film and a ww2 flying ace film and a western film and adding laser swords#because he fundamentally LIKED samurai films and dambusters films and westerns and 40’s adventure serials#but disney are making a ‘star wars film’ and adding nothing because it already had laser swords and they have nothing else to say#xerox of a xerox baybeeeee (via harrietvane)

How to Start by rthwrms
for the times when you really truly want to do something, but find resistance or that starting feels impossible
most helpful action to get into a task is: look at it options include: review what you've already done open the tab on screen blur your eyes at first if that helps fullscreen the image browse or skim relevant texts let your gaze move around how it will JUST...LOOK!!!
Your brain has resistance towards starting the particular project in the way that you've previously conceived of it. Instead of fighting that resistance, try to change your approach to starting your work. Ie, start with colored pencils on a piece you were doing in gouache, include a new stitch in a crochet piece, Step one: identify the process Step two: identify places where something new can be included Step three: brainstorm new options to fill these spots Step four: select one or more options and try your piece from this new angle
encourage yourself by asking questions start with: "What am I actually trying to do right now?" then try: "What would this look like if it were more fun?" "How would I do it if anything was possible?"
divide into discrete tasks make the closest or shiniest one literally as small & specific as freaking possible

“Freedom always has a price.”
― Persepolis (2007) dir. Marjane Satrapi, Vincent Paronnaud
I’d like your opinion on (if you even recognize) any of these childhood series that I totally adored but can barely even vaguely remember now. Included multiple because you might not recognize any.
1: Deltora (I was going to say Deltora Quest but I think maybe that was just part of it?)
2: Gone? Lost? Something about a bunch of kids getting stuck in a city with no adults by a barrier and starting to develop powers.
4: A kid with a doorway to another world in his basement and he and his friend would go through to have magic adventures? I think it started with a D.
5: A crazy rich kid gets a book that seals monsters which is good cause there are sudddnly evil fairies everywhere and a shady Templar group. I think the first book was called the Shadow King.
6: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel (actually finished this one! It, like any of these, would make a great anime.)
most directly in response to:
The only one that even slightly rings a bell is Deltora, I'm afraid. Which I vaguely associate with a sort of very crunchy choose-your-own-adventure book series (as in you had multiple stats whose values were tracked and such)? The rest all sound entirely new to me.
Gone is one of the GOATs, it's written by Animorphs co-author Michael Grant (Applegate's husband). The setting may be very different but it has a lot of the qualities I liked about ASOIAF actually.
Deltora Quest by Emily Rodda!
The basement one might be the Secrets of Droon series (rainbow staircase in the basement?)
The fae one sounds vaguely like the faerie wars by Herbie Brennan but I'm not very confident about that

I read Cinder House (Freya Marske) the other day and really enjoyed it. I think I've been a bit snooty and pre-judgmental about tor.com novella stuff*, and also the glut of fairy tale retellings, so when I heard this was a good book I was just like eh idk. But this was really nice. The main characters (Ella and others who I won't spoil) all felt complex and compelling to me. The house embodiment stuff was really cool, well-described and with lots of surprising detail. And I like Cinderella (I mean, magical costume/persona transformation, true love and connection against all odds, shitty family-- I just like it. I like happy endings a lot) and I was surprised at how Marske re-interpreted things. (See spoiler under cut.) It's short and good and I'd enjoy talking about it with whoever.
* I do think that Tor, like some other publishers, has a problem of same-voiciness/same-editorness in a good chunk of its work. (But not all!!)
