I think people underestimate the sheer horror of Jonas’ existence, especially once Noah makes it clear that the time disturbance won’t let him die. He can suffer, he can feel pain, he can hang there struggling for breath, but he can’t die. Jonas Kahnwald is denied the solace and freedom of death until the knot is untied. Only he and Martha have that Pyrrhic trait, and the vast majority of the time they’re separated and unable to comfort one another with worlds or time between them. Everything and anything can harm them, but the solace of death or non existence is denied them.

taiwan travelogue is in a whole different ballpark re: subtlety and sincere interest in unpacking the thornier and more unpleasant aspects of colonial/national identity than the taipei story, but i do fear how both novels becoming popular around the same time is going to trigger a wave of #taiwanmaaxing or #averytaiwanesetimeinmylife from the readers from the west who might suddenly think themselves taiwan experts after reading two (2) fiction novels in quick succession about the country while having known jackshit about it or have spoken to a single actual local taiwanese person before
