The fact that she tries so hard to ensure that her message isn’t misunderstood has the unfortunate consequence of revealing a complete lack of trust in her readers. Her audience seems to be largely made up of people who are either already somewhat familiar with post-colonial theory, or whose knowledge of the struggles POC face resonate with the contents of her books. This makes it all the more baffling that Kuang treats her readers like they’re stupid, with the repetitive and condescending way she conveys her themes. It’s even more frustrating to see people defend this feature of her writing for the sake of appealing to the lowest common denominator of her target audience. We really don’t need another after school PSA. We just need a story that trusts its readers, and has faith that they will understand its message.
