â~Introduction:
Hi, Iâm Echie/Ticara!! Iâm an adult (â00), queer, and use any pronouns. Iâve been lurking in the otherkin communities for around 10 years now but didnât start interacting much until 2018. Iâm a paleotherian, otherkin, fictionkin, and in general just very nonhuman. I use both spiritual and psychological explanations for my nonhumanity. Iâve been practicing witchcraft for around the same amount of time so expect some overlapping topics when it comes to both my âtypes and my craft.Â
I use this blog mostly to keep up with the community, but Iâd like to start using it more to discuss my own experiences with nonhumanity, as well as things like journaling, spell keeping/craft talk, and just general nonhuman thoughts. I donât tend to discuss 18+ things here but I would prefer if my followers were 18+ just for my own peace of mind if I ever do. Â
More information below!!

I donât involve myself with too much discourse and tend to block liberally, but for the sake of time:
I support systems of all types (I (we) are plural but donât discuss that here and find itâs no one elseâs business).
I support physical nonhumans and whatever reasons they have to identify that way.
I donât give a ratâs ass about shipping discourse.Â
I hate generative AI with a passion and will block anyone using it.

I need to actually start posting my rambles so I can move into larger personal essays, So:
I tend to use my hands in odd ways.
Part of this comes from hypermobility that several rounds of physical therapy simply haven't been able to fix, and part of it comes from my alien species.
Xiikus have strange hands in comparison to humans; they're elongated, with two thumbs, and a stunted pinky. The pointer is longer than the middle, and the last digit of the fingers is practically all bone and claw. With the right care, ones claws could be tools or even weapons. You had to be precise when grabbing for things, unless you wanted to accidentally scratch, rip, or cut whatever it was you were handling.
This, obviously, results in some strange mannerisms when it comes to the usage of human hands, and this has had compounding effects on my joints as I've aged. My pinky often takes the job of a second thumb, extending the joint out and often causing it to sit out of place (be it from subluxation or outright dislocation). I spend a vast majority of my time with my other three fingers curled, trying to mimic their proper length. I tend to grab things with the padding at the base of my fingers and then roll it back into my palm, as I would've as a Xiikus. It simply doesn't feel right if it isn't done that way.
My hands feel short and ill-formed most of the time, and my hypermobility often causes pain. This has been strange for me to adapt to as I've gotten older because, to me, the extended range of motion simply matched the way things should have been. Pair that with using my hands this way for years, and it's a daunting habit to drop.
Xiikusâ limbs would be considered hypermobile to humans, but to us, that was just the way our limbs worked. That extended mobility allowed for greater reach, greater movement, and while there were secondary joints that could've caused pain, should they be pushed too far, it was nothing like the limitations the human body displays. We were, quite literally, built for that type of movement.
Currently I'm trying to figure out how I can properly support my joints while still allowing for my natural movements, but the human body is hard and a finicky creature to exist in, so it's a work in progress.
"i wish i was around for the old community" "the older community just has that feel to it" MOTHER FUCKER YOU ARE GOING TO BE THE OLD COMMUNITY!! stop romanticizing and past and ROMANTICIZE THE PRESENT!! 10 YEARS IS GOING TO PASS NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO!! USE YOUR TIME TO CULTIVATE SOMETHING!!!
Additionally, the old community had huge problems with ableism and exclusionism. I cannot stress enough that yâall cannot let wishful thinking distract you from the full picture. We can respect those whoâve come before us, all the discussions they held and the spaces they created without romanticizing them. Regardless of what you think about the communityâs current state, it is arguably better than its past.
If the community was anything like it was maybe twenty-ish years ago, I wouldâve left. Thereâs far too many aspects of my alterhumanity that wouldâve had me grilled, disrespected and harassed to hell and back. Iâve heard enough accounts from fictionkind who either saw this firsthand or shortly thereafter. Honestly, you donât even need to go as far as twenty years ago when cases like Tirea Naâviâs happened in 2010. Donât even get me started on the communityâs history with linking and the concept of choice-based experiences in general.
You can do the things that you see from our communitiesâ past. The current state of your community has never impeded you from doing that. I may not post my essays on Tumblr as much as I used to, but I still write them and post them to Dreamwidth!
You want forums? Join the Nonhuman National Park! You want to see more discussion and commentary on peopleâs experiences? Participate in conventions! Be it as staff, as a panelist or an attendeeâ make connections! Look into ways to safely organize in-person meet-ups and clubs! You want to see more art or other creative works from alterhumans? Boost artists in our community! Download our peersâ zines and games on Itch.io! Read our peersâ writings, whether itâs poetry, essays, short stories or ramblings! I know it feels nonexistent, but our community IS thriving and full of culture!
There's so much misanthropy in the alterhuman community and it sucks to see.
Just a reminder to any alterhumans who are still partially or fully human; your human nature is not evil. You are not a disease that needs to be wiped out. You are not irredeemable. You are still alterhuman, and your human aspects are beautiful too. You deserve to be here just as much as those of us with little to no human identity.

The schedule for Othercon 2026 is now available! While it is currently considered complete, some time slots may change as presenters make adjustments ahead of the con: https://othercon.zohobackstage.com/Othercon2026#/agenda
By default the timezone may be in UTC -05:00 (America/New York). On desktop/large screens this can be changed near the top of the schedule, right above where the days are selected. On mobile/small screens it can be changed by opening the side menu (the 3 bars in the top-left corner).
Aaaaannnd... The Queue!
It is now possible to enter the join queue for the con from our website here: https://othercon.org/
It is very important to note that there is a deadline for entry! The invite will be deleted after Day 1 (Friday) of the con. This means that on Day 2 (Saturday, August 15th) the link will no longer exist and entry will be closed. Please enter the queue before that time, this is to lessen the workload for our staff.
i love the enthusiasm and dedication you have and i would much rather see it put towards your crafts, or writing, or (insert passion here) than see it put towards forcing yourself to be an educator. because you havenât been in the community for very long - let alone the world! - not only do you run the risk of spreading misinformation by total accident, but you also run the risk of not having your own life experiences!
You don't have to label your identity if you don't want to, even if a label fits your experiences. Even if your experiences could fit e.g. therian, plural, otherlink or otherkin label, you don't have to use that label to describe your experiences. It's *your* choice if you want to use labels or not, and you don't have to choose to use them, if you don't want to.
I know this has been said before but a lot of you are pissing me off so I'm going to say it again.
Being alterhuman does not mean you have some ~special ability~ to interact with wild animals.
DO NOT go touching/chasing/ generally messing with wildlife. You aren't special and you could harm those animals, or be harmed by them. Even small things like bugs can kill you. You aren't immune to rabies.
If you scare wild animals by chasing them for species euphoria or whatever, you can genuinly kill them. Birders have a term for when it happens to birds, its called a Dread Flight. When you unnecessarily scare a wild animal, you are causing it to waste energy it needs to survive. Wildlife can't afford to waste energy. You're enjoyment is NEVER worth disturbing wildlife.
You do not have the training to rescue wild animals just because you're alterhuman. If you don't have the actual training to resue wildlife and you genuinely find an animal in need of help, CALL A FUCKING WILDLIFE REHABILITATION CENTER!!!! It isn't that hard to find the number for your local center and they'll tell you what to do, if anything, and help you if necessary.
I'm so sick of seeing alterhumans online think they can interact with wildife willy nilly just because they're alterhuman. Please fucking stop.
Iâm going to use a personal example thatâs not in context to wildlife but still in context to how folks treat theriform animals. Itâs also specific to animals in the alterhuman community because I mainly see this with other animals, not so much nonhumans in general. Nonetheless, I hope itâll put something into perspective.
I am a horse. Iâve ridden other horses before, albeit as a guest at a ranch within my area. For the times Iâve visited my kind and interacted with them, Iâve done so under clear instruction from those who regularly take care of them, train them and work with them.
At no point have I ever gone out of my way to interact with my kind under the assumption that Iâm engaging with them from one species member to another. Nor have I engaged with them under the assumption thatâ because I too am a horseâ I know what Iâm doing. This is because I understand mindfulness is of utmost importance. Riding is a privilege, not a right. So is engaging with your local wildlife. Your behavior makes all the difference, and those consequences are often irreversible. Besides, OP already listed some pretty good reasons on why this matters.
I know folks like to get up close and personal with animals. Usually, itâs to pet them, take pictures or act out to get a reaction out of them if they feel emboldened enough. In my case, they wonât hesitate to do so without the animals, the trail boss or any other staff who work with these animals in mind, knowing damn well they donât know these animals or their behaviors. Sometimes, these folks turn out okay but get a scolding. Sometimes, they go into full Karen Mode because the staff did their job by addressing their guestsâ behavior. Iâve seen group members get kicked out because they had the bright idea of trying to sneak inside in the stables nearby. These are individual cases from the ranch near me and the trail rides Iâve been on.
Back when I went on trail rides, I didnât make any sudden or overly touchy movements while being paired up with a horse. Iâd also watch my volume once I was in proximity with my riding companion. Yes, Iâm an animal like them but Iâm still responsible for my own behavior. Inappropriate behavior could bring immense distress or harm the horse and even myself. The chances of an accident happening is never a guaranteed zero. Moreover, other horses arenât going to assume Iâm socializing with them as another horse. Theyâre going to assume Iâm posing some kind of a threat to them or refusing to back off and act accordingly, which is something that many folksâ in AND outside of this communityâ need to keep in mind. Entitlement to an animalâs space or existence is an issue that a lot of folks have, even if thatâs not your intention! To you, it may not come off as entitlement because youâre doing something that brings you some kind of euphoria. Even so, it doesnât change the fact that youâre using another animalâs existence as an excuse to gratify yourself. Thatâs not okay.
I understand wanting to express your animality. I understand wanting to be recognized among your kind or among other animals in general. I get it, but you cannot jeopardize the wellbeing of your local wildlife and any other animals for your validation.
Overfamiliarity doesnât just happen between humans. It can happen between you and a theriform animal simply because you too are an animal and feel like thatâs enough of a reason to act the way you do around them. Reconsider the next time you see that squirrel on the sidewalk or bird on a tree branch. Your actions donât exist in a vacuum.
Small addition: No matter how much you think it's true, theriform members of your species aren't psychic and don't have the ability to see you as one of their kind even though you are. They can't 'sense' that you're different, they don't 'see you as you really are'. It's a nice fantasy but not rooted in truth and believing so can harm them as talked about above.
This is true even if you believe you have mastered the body language and signals of your species. It sucks, I know it sucks, but you must care about them more than your own feelings and you must endeavour to not interpret their behaviour through an anthropomorphic lens. Your sentience is a gift that allows you to be kinder and more considerate to theriform animals and teach others to do the same, use it.
I know this has been said before but a lot of you are pissing me off so I'm going to say it again.

It is something that is quite often repeated in therian spaces is the abundance of wolves in particular. Rather than doing the methode where a bunch of species are listed I am curious how close the community on average is to wolf.
Please select the closest common clade. If you do not have a nonhuman identity, please select the bottom result if you wish to see the results to avoid skewing the information. If you have multiple types select the closest (or most significant depending on your desire). If your type is not classified such as theriomythics, please select the Other option. If the type classification is unclear (i.e. certain ediacaran or similar ancient life) select which you think best fits.
Addendum: Please put domestic dogs until Canis for C. Familiaris even if modern taxonomy sets domestic dogs as subspecies of C. Lupus. Additionally if you are a cross species animal (i.e. Mule or Wolfdog) use the parent species closest to wolves. If additional edgecases are found, ping me in the replies.
Examples: Minke Whale (balaenoptera acutorostrata) - Mammalia, African Wild Dog (lycaon pictus) - Canidae, Common Tern (sterna hirundo) - Chordata, Pegasus - Mythical: Other, Silver Elf - Non-Terran: Other
How Close to Wolf Are You?
Species: C. Lupus
Genus: Canis
Family: Canidae
Order: Carnivora
Class: Mammalia
Phylum: Chordata
Kingdom: Animalia
Life: Terran
Non-Terran, Non-Life, Non-Classified, Mythic, or Other
Results/I do not identify as non-human

Please reblog this to share it further as I am quite curious and would benefit from getting responses beyond my immidiate circle.
âThere are no âeldersâ or leaders [of the otherkin community]. Just because someone has a website, has written a few essays, is an admin or a moderator, or has had more âexperienceâ than you, it does not necessarily make them any more qualified than you to say something or any more worthy of respect. There is no arbiter of the truth here and there is no one who should be given special treatment.â
-Excerpt from âAdvice for those new to Otherkin,â an article written by Mikhâto in 2014
While I wholeheartedly agree with this statement, I would like to clarify that you should still at least hear those who are older in the community. They've gone through a lot, have lots of experiences to share, and sometimes hearing those experiences can help you through your own.
The young can learn from the old and the old can also learn from the young.
A young alterhuman does not owe an older alterhuman their ear.
Older alterhumans have just as much (if not sometimes more) capacity to be as biased and misinformed as any alterhuman younger than them. Age does not make wisdom, age does not dictate how worthwhile someone is to listen to.
It is worthwhile to approach someone who has more knowledge in a specific field, discipline, or craft than you and ask them for advice on that specific topic, but that's circumstantially based on what someone has actually done, not age. In this same way, age also does not make knowledge.
So, no. Age has no merit innate in itself. Listen to others based on their actions and if they've proven themself to be trustworthy and accurate, not how many times they've been around the sun.
All of us in the otherkin communities are equal peers. Any of us can listen to, criticize, view with skepticism, or ignore any other of us, according to each of our own personal choices. You, me, any of us. And that's good. Each of us creatures came together in this community because of something in common that we already had before each of us met each other, not because we're looking for gurus telling us what to do, think, or believe. That's a healthy safeguard against cultishness. For this reason, it's a red flag for anyone to proclaim themselves a leader of our communities, whether they get an exaggerated sense of importance about running a chatroom, or whether they give themselves titles such as elder, king, princess, alpha, or graymuzzle. That can be a warning sign that they expect to be treated differently than others in a way that they cannot deserve here.

being physically nonhuman and/or having a body like a theriform doesnât automatically unlearn you of racist and anthrocentric propaganda and ideals. matter of fact being any level of nonhuman or alterhuman doesnât automatically unlearn you of it either. changing what names you put on yourself doesnât change the fact that you are still living a lifestyle supported by a habitat that is shaped by systemic racism and human supremacy and sustained by willful ignorance of the everyday evidence of those facts.
this goes beyond the physical nonhumanity misunderstanders in the community too. iâm sick of white alterhumans posting endless lists of labels and microlabels as proof theyâre âwokeâ when being anti-racist and woke isnât in your fucking identity and self-talk, itâs in your actual actions towards others or by yourself, ESPECIALLY in your reactions to getting criticized for doing something that goes against what you âidentify asâ standing for.
The fabric of me snags against this reality. @encoding-the-stars - Tumblr Blog | Tumlook
