Let’s start with some wildlife. I love this artwork of Kiri and Spider watching baby medusoids 🥹

And these are shots from a scene that was ultimately cut from a movie. We were supposed to see a montage of Pandora’s landscapes and wildlife from aboard the Windtrader caravan; including a huge Hammerhead migration (image 1).

Concepts of Spider’s transformation; the artists noticed they wanted the sequence to mimic a butterfly sprouting from its cocoon.

Metkayina coming-of-age celebration! It was supposed to feature and entire underwater party for the tulkun, a dance where young Na’vi bond and dance with their spirit siblings, AND, AND, UNDERWATER DRUMS. Played inside these giant shells, thereby bringing the party directly to the tulkun!

One of the concepts of the swamp region made for that chase scene. Turns out, it’s not your normal swamp; this region flooded about a 100 years prior and turned into a yucky soup made of rotting debris and fungus. It’s still full of life, but as we saw in the movie, not nearly as vibrant as the rest of the forest. There was also another concept (posted by the artist on insta some time ago) of there being giant centipedes in the water as Sullies and Quaritch passed through, but it was cut :(

I love how Quaritch just can’t help himself. I’m sure a part of him would love to hate this random kid but he’s so attached at this point that Spider has canonically become a person who gives him purpose. This boy can threaten and hurt and shoot him — and this violent bastard will still, almost instinctively, hold him the first chance he gets.

Reading the AFAA art book makes my jaw drop because wdym Eywa, as she evolved in intelligence, projected that one day inventions out of metal and electronics will exist. Wdym she PURPOSELY created her sacred sites (trees of souls/voices) around naturally occurring flux sites like the Hallelujah mountains and the flux the cove of ancestors (where the flux vortex occurs) just in case that that technology becomes a problem in the distant future. WDYM???

A drunk one night stand? Really? I never read the comics but if that’s true The writing just sucks all the way around. Why would Paz name her baby boy after Someone she slept with once? And who actively avoided being in her son’s life?

It’s either

A. Paz is trying to compete with Big bird from Sesame Street. ie: wants her son to carry the name of the WORST man on the damn planet. Because that her man and he can do no wrong.

B. Paz named him Javier originally and someone changed it???

C. Paz named him jr to prove without doubt who the father of her baby is. (Maybe Quatritch denied being the pappy and that hurt her pride a bit)

D. Now this is a theory I’ve been playing around wit for awhile and I believe you had the same one too.

Quatritch is not his father. Spider Father was someone else on base and to save her ass and job she claimed it was her bosses baby. And no one bothered to do a DNA test to check.

(Only reason i dislike the last one is because it gives spider this final out for most of his struggles as a character. He can breathe the air now and is somewhat accepted. The only thing he has now is the struggle that comes with his parentage.)

The AFAA art book showed that colonel Quaritch actually has his own personal quarters at Bridgehead — a modular unit that was shipped to Pandora together with his body years ago. It has a work-desk, a shower, a vanity table, some top shelves and two beds.

Headcannons:

When the squad made their periodic returns to Bridgehead for resupplying and reports, Spider crashed at Q’s place. Quaritch justified it with being the prisoner’s ward and having a better eye on him that way.

Spider definitely snooped all over the place and opened every drawer, closet and compartment he could find, but discovered nothing interesting. Colonel’s apartment is sickeningly sterile at first.

Spider takes the top bunk, naturally, and Quaritch often wakes to him hanging half-way off the edge, his painted hand dangling just above his chest. He tried more than once to hold it without making the boy bolt awake (forest survival instincts)

Spider loosing his mind from boredom and turning the flat into a hurricane site as Quaritch is trying to get some work done on the computer (he does that on purpose).

Giving him a tablet usually helps though.

Coming back from the failed mission, the room became a cold reminder of the person now missing from his life.
