Lily hated her job. It was supposed to just be something on the side, a few hours between classes and on the weekends, just to be able to actually afford going to a club with her friends now and then or affording to eat more than packets of instant noodles for every meal. Her boss was nice, at least, he'd let her grab as many unsold, stale baked goods as she could carry at the end of her shifts. But the costumers were douchebags, some being douchebags that she'd get to meet again in classes next term and acted as if her having a job on campus and showing them up in class was something to ostracise her over.
Her absolute least favourite customer, though, was James Potter. King douchebag. His favourite pastime seemed to be simply aggravating her as much as possible. At least once a week, usually around three times a week, he would strut into the cafe, smile that obnoxious smile, and ask her a million questions about the menu (despite being a regular that should definitely know the menu by now), before finally deciding on a drink (sometimes a baked good), and would tap his phone on the machine before asking her out. Every week she would say no. At first she rejected him delicately, now there would usually be a handful of colourful language attached to the rejection. James Potter was either the most arrogant, annoying, arsehole ever, or the biggest, blindest, oblivious idiot. Lily tended to view him as somewhere between the two.
"Evans", the prat greeted today, during the morning rush at that, "Good to see you."
He leaned on the counter.
James cocked his head slightly and pouted, "I don't think that's how you're supposed to treat customers, Miss Evans."
"Hi, what can i get you today?"
She gave him an overly dramatic fake smile.
He just smiled back before looking up at the screen above her.
"I'm not sure", he pretended to think, "What brand of oat milk do you use?"
"Alpro. As I've told you every week for almost a year now."
James pouted again, "Not a big fan of Alpro... How do you steep your tea?"
"Potter", she sighed, "This is really a bad time for all this; there is a huge line. As you know, since you were just waiting in it for five minutes, during which time you could have easily spent reading the menu and looking at all the extra details on our website, where there are codes to literally everywhere in here."
James sighed, "But I like when you explain it to me."
"Can you just hurry up and choose something? Mary's had to nip out, so I'm the only one here at the moment, and the line's almost out the door."
"Fine, fine", he held his hands up, "I'll just grab a mocha with almond milk."
Lily had already placed it on the machine and started making it since she saw him enter. It had been his go-to Monday morning drink before his class with Hooch since the beginning of the term. She didn't know why he was so adamant about making her job so difficult when he was so routine in his ordering choices.
He tapped his phone against the machine, and Lily went to finish up the drink.
She placed the drink on the counter.
"Medium mocha with Almond milk."
James grinned at her. She knew what would happen now, what he always just had to do before finally picking up the drink and going off to sit at a table far out of her earshot.
"So... Evans. You free this weekend?"
"For you? Not in a million years."
"Oh, come on, I bet you have zero plans."
"Well, on your break, we could hang out?"
She picked up his drink, shoving it at his chest.
"I'd rather kiss a slug than spend more than a couple of minutes having to speak to you. You're the most conceited, disagreeable, fuckhead git, that I've ever had the displeasure of meeting."
She smiled, "Have a great day."
His stupid smile returned, "See you later, Evans!"
