I was commissioned to write a continuation of my first mimic story! I’ve named the mimic in this story as well and it crosses over with several of my other stories, especially this one.

Part One 

   You wake up, still expecting to see the cold walls of the castle. Instead, you see sunlight shimmering through the curtains hanging around your bed. You sit up, the sheets falling from your shoulder as you rub your eyes. The bed is warm and soft, but aside from you, it’s empty.

   You slip out of bed and go to the window, gazing out and seeing the small town just below. You see the people wandering the streets going about their day. You smile slightly, glad to not see the jagged cliffs and the endless abyss that had waited outside the castle’s windows.

It used to be that “stuff in your orbit” was a passive suggestion. All day I’ve been trying to figure out why my dashboard flow has been stuttering and incoherent. Turns out, they turned “stuff in your orbit” into the same damned thing as “best stuff first” and you have to turn it off in order to see your actual dash in actual chronological order.

Otherwise, you basically only see the feed as if it was a mishmash of your mutuals’(?) likes.

There was a shift in the woods.

They were brighter than the surrounding forest even though the sun was barely peaking through the canopy. The greens of leaves were bright, almost florescent, as if they were the source of light among the wood’s twisted path.  Helle’s feet were throbbing while her eyelids hung heavy, begging for the chance to close. Morning had come once more; she almost felt that the sun was never going to rise.

Night had lasted so long. Helle could feel her shins ache with each step, consistent throbbing jolting up her spine. She had to be getting closer. It was apparent with the way the forest was changing around her.

She was now in the elderly witch’s territory.

Helle couldn’t stop.

Although the air was turning thicker and thicker with the presence of magic, she was still too far in the territory’s outskirt.

Safety was yet to fall upon her.

The pain of her steps was nowhere near what she would succumb to if she stopped. Her mind knew that. It was the only reason she was still capable of moving.

Through the thick brush ahead, Helle could see a large figure shift in the shadows. Her heart rate jumped at the movement, sending a rush of adrenaline through her veins. She had to be getting closer.

Without missing a step, Helle fell to her knees and continued forward in a crawl. The thin lining of her pale linen dress served no protection from the forest floor. With each shift, twigs and rocks dug into her palms and knees. Helle could smell the brimstone and musk looming in the air.

She had to keep pushing forward.

It was only a few more steps now.

With a final push through the dense bush she fell into a small meadow clearing. In a matter of seconds, broad black jaws lined with ivory white teeth lunged toward her face.

“Are you Brynjar?” She breathed out, forcing the jaws to halt mere inches away from her face. Helle could see directly down the dragon’s throat from where he froze. His blue tongue flexed momentarily.

Warm breath exhaled from the depths of its throat, pushing back the free strains of her curly blonde hair from her fair face. Helle silently watched as the dragon slowly closed his jaws, leaving them nose to nose.

His copper eyes intently observed her.
