Kate knew she was in trouble the second her mother entered her office after Kate’s meeting concluded. She was calm and collected as she shut the door on Kate’s client, but as she turned around, Kate could see the barely contained fury in her eyes. “What kind of game do you think you’re playing at?” her mother asked, still barely keeping it together. “Uh, I’m not exactly sure what you’re talking about?” Kate had barely spoken to her mom that day, she’d only been in the building for an hour. She gave a resigned sigh. “What did I do this time?” “I understand if you’re mad at me for everything, even though I only ever did it to keep you safe, but sleeping with a known assassin?” Eleanor pinched her nose in frustration. “This is a new low, even for you, Kate.” “Wow, okay.” What did Kate even do with that? “First off, I’m not ‘sleeping with’ Yelena, we’re just—” “‘Just friends?’” Her mother scoffed. “Where have you been staying since your apartment burnt down?” Kate had no response for that.

I'm making a full dark-mode version of this, but that will be for later.

Basically build up from the Reversi skin. Since I didn't work with the default light-mode Ao3 for the Win98 Light Mode, that one may not be perfect with some of the text being in either a light or dark font color.

Dark Mode is better in text but I couldn't figure out a color palette for the header bars that both suited the dark mode of it and the win98 feel. Still, it's much better on the eyes at night, and that't the most important for me.

Summary:

It's easy to stalk Kate Bishop, vampire hunter, no The Slayer. It would be sad if it weren't also so lacking in action. Three stores and two churches and now she's heading back to her house. Then Kate surprises her by speaking in a low voice, like she's speaking to herself. "Following me now, Yelena Belova?"

"Now?" She says, a prod to her lack of general self-awareness, hoping down from the balcony she was standing on and landing on her feet.

The pair continue heading toward Kate's house. "It's dangerous for a vampire to do that in this city." A stray hand hovers at the stake in a hidden holster at her side. "Or anywhere."

I don't need to remind you of all that!"she chuckles blithely, "But seriously? Garage-chic?" She scoffs and shoves her hands into her pockets, wondering what has drawn Valentina out here. Surely not a conversation like this. "What do you want this time?" "Want? Well!" If Valentina is annoyed, she doesn't sound like it, even as she gives a sharp tsk with her tongue at Yelena's rudeness. "I should think that's obvious, right?" Yelena continues to stare ahead as she walks at a relatively brisk pace. "Please, spell it out to me." "Just the same offer I gave to your friend, John Walker! Complete control over your territory. Join me, and I'll even see about lifting that little curse."

Kate: How many people do you tell that same thing to?

Yelena: Everyone.

Kate: Everyone?
