Alternative Career: Therapist
An alternative career pathway that I have considered in the past is being a therapist especially towards the younger generation. Although I have not directly suffered from mental diseases such as depression or anxiety, I understand the impacts that such neurological diseases may have on a person through my immediate family such as my sister or through close friends whom I have lost to such diseases. I believe that being a therapist would allow me to see people in their most vulnerable states, providing a lot of more direct satisfactions and feelings of helpfulness throughout. In my opinion, it is very important in a future job to be able to see my efforts benefit others in front of my eyes, so I can stay motivated. I believe that being a therapist would allow me to do that very effectively.
There are several downsides of this, however, one being how reliant other’s lives would be on me. Although physicians technically also have individual’s lives on their hands, I feel like as a therapist and handling an individual's mental and emotional health makes it more pressure upon me to provide the best advice I can and not say anything wrong. Moreover, although I am an overall empathetic individual, sometimes, the words that come out of my mouth are not what I meant to say in my head or do not sound the way I wanted them to, and I would be too scared that this blunder would affect someone’s life in a negative manner. On top of this, although I am a very social person who could listen and talk with someone for hours, I believe that if my entire career is single handedly circled around talking to people and making them feel better, I would slowly lose my love for talking. I think the difference between talking and communicating with patients as a therapist versus as a physician is that, as a therapist, everything is dependent upon how I talk with the patients and if I said the right thing. For physicians, as long as the right information is relayed and I act normally, there is no way I can mess up as bad. I believe that this extra pressure placed upon therapists would cause me to overthink every conversation I have held, making me wonder if anyone felt worse after coming to me.
Overall, balancing the positives and negatives of the alternative career, I believe that, in theory, being a therapist would be a wonderful job due to how fulfilling it is; however, I think that, in the long-run, it would negatively impact mental health.
