my life has gotten exponentially better since I abandoned the âI was once a kid in AP programs and now Iâm a subpar to average adult like the rest of the rabble, boohoo, woe is meâ mindset and wholeheartedly adopted the fact that Iâm a big loud dumbass and Iâm going to make it everyoneâs problem

I hate the internet. đ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Ł
God Bless Veneida Smith.
So this whole thing started with this tweet. I started plowing through newspapers to find every mention of her - and found most that were out there, but a man named Todd Sanders, who had access to Pennsylvania libraries, found quite a few more. All of this takes place in October and November of 1922, before timeskipping to September 1923 (her third escape), October 1923 (her guilty verdict), and March 1924 (her escape attempt with Roxie Starcher).
I have been unable to find her obituary or anything else out there about my new hero.
I though this couldnât get any better from when I first saw it but now it involves the supernatural.

With Stephen Hawkingâs passing, today is a sad day for science. But amongst all his praise and achievements in the fields of physics, for me personally his biggest achievement was making a grand, full life despite the terrible misfortune of being diagnosed with ALS. It would have been easy to become a recluse, embittered with the hand heâd been dealt, a brilliant misanthrope. But this was a man who maintained his sense of humor and refused to be mentally beaten. Three years ago, he told One Direction fans that the theory of alternate universes could provide a reality where Zayn Malik was still in the band. He conducted an interview with John Oliver where his factual, deadpan delivery was funnier than his interviewer, managing the cheekiest grins as he did so. And let us not forget that Stephen Hawking is the only person to have ever portrayed themselves in a Star Trek episode (Next Generation, âDescent, Part 1âł), where he appeared alongside actors portraying Einstein and Sir Isaac Newton, whom he proceeded to defeat in poker.
Hawkingâs observations on black hole radiation, string theory, alternate universes and artificial intelligence are things that will probably forever remain beyond most of us. But we could all learn a thing or two from his humanity.
The passing of Stephen Hawking is a devastating loss for humankind. Heâs shaped the way so many of us think about space, about life, and about the universe. If youâre grieving today, we understand. May we suggest you click on the links in the post above? Reflecting on his mammoth wit, charm, and intelligence might make you feel a little bit better.
Rest in peace, Stephen Hawking.

Itâs Not Just A Cold, Itâs âSickness Behaviorâ
Itâs just a cold. But even though I know Iâm not horribly ill, I feel this overwhelming need to skip work, ignore my family and retreat to the far corner of the sofa.
Iâm not being a wimp, it turns out. Those feelings are a real thing called âsickness behavior,â which is sparked by the bodyâs response to infection. The same chemicals that tell the immune system to rush in and fend off invading viruses also tell us to slow down; skip the eating, drinking and sex; shun social interactions; and rest.
âThose messages are so powerful they canât be ignored,â says Philip Chen, a rhinologist at the University of Texas, San Antonio. But that doesnât mean we donât try. Symptoms like a stuffy nose are obvious, Chen notes, but weâre less aware that changes in mood and behavior are also part of our bodiesâ natural response to infection.
It might behoove us to pay attention. There is plenty of evidence that having a cold impairs mood, alertness and working memory and that brain performance falls off with even minor symptoms.
But for most people, having a cold does not equal âtake the week off.â And that means many people work sick, even when it can put others in danger.
A 2015 survey of food workers found that half âalwaysâ or âfrequentlyâ went to work while sick. And a survey of doctors and other health care providers at Childrenâs Hospital of Philadelphia found that even though 95 percent of them thought showing up to work sick puts patients at risk, 83 percent of them did it anyway. Colds were the most common cause of working sick.
