It’s hard enough to encourage the public to see the value in space exploration, especially when the problems facing society right now are so intense that space exploration seems frivolous and needlessly expensive by comparison (keyword “seems”) but now that this clown is the face of the future of space, it’s doubling, hell, tripling down on the idea that space exploration is a fantasy for bored billionaires that would rather fuck off to mars and escape the problems of earthly society (problems that they had a starring role in creating) rather than spend a penny of their wealth to help remedy them. Tale as old as time for a science communicator. Heard it a million times. But now it’s so much harder to get people to understand the other side of the coin because the nightmare scenario is already here and his name is elongated muskrat

To add a little bit of context as to what that value actually is… The thing I hear the most in this conversation is “we need to take care of this planet before we start thinking about other ones.” Yes, I agree. The well-being of our planet and it’s people should be out top priority. But we can’t properly take care of our planet if we don’t fully understand it.

The Earth does not exist in a bubble. It’s part of a dynamic and ever-evolving solar system, and galaxy and universe. He have to look at the earth in that context to be able to know and care for it. To care for a planet, we have to know how planets work. When doctors treat patients they look at the medical record, they look at family history, they look at symptoms and compare them to known diseases to find a diagnosis.

How did the earth form? What was it like in the past? Why did it change? That’s the medical record.

We’ve got the earths siblings in the neighborhood. Why is Mars a frozen desert? Why is Venus a molten hell scape? Could those things happen here? That’s the family history.

What kinds of things are floating around our neighborhood? Could they affect us? All this is necessary to diagnose the Earths problem, to anticipate the direction it’s going, and to help it heal.

And the minute we get an asteroid scare, that’s when folks start asking why we weren’t looking up 🙄

every so often i remember how awesome the modern interconnected multicultural world is. i grew up getting to hear fairy tales from all over the world. africa, asia, europe, america. everywhere in between. i can have bagels for breakfast, curry for lunch, and ramen for dinner without even leaving the city limits. music and art and philosophy and technology that originated thousands of miles and years apart from eachother have come together and interwoven into something greater than the sum of its parts. its hard not fall into despair when thinking about the horrors but god. god the wonders.

Looking at the Timeline for the Astral Express displayed in the Wiki, made me realize that Himeko travelled for at least 13 Years through the Cosmos, with Pom-Pom as her only companion. Given that there are no other passengers mentioned between the departure of the Astral Express in 1984 of the Arcadian Calender and December 8098 SC. The 13 Years are a rough estimate based on the fact that both the Arcadian and the Star Calender of the Xianzhou use a System of 12 Months per Year. While at the same time assuming that everything since the start of our Journey happened within one year or a little bit more, as the current events happen in 1999 of the Arcadian Calender, while 8100 is the latest year given by the Star Calender to date the current events. Given that Himeko departed on her Journey 15 Years ago (1984 of the Arcadian Calender), this should be 8085 according to the Star Calender by used by the Xianzhou Alliance. All based on the explanation that the Phantasmoon Games happen every 15 Years. I might be Wrong and the Events are shifted by one year. Given that some Events relevant to our Adventure on the Luofu happen in March of 8100 SC and it feels weird to think that the events hsppened within less than 9 Months. According to the Wiki Welt, Void Archives, and Dan Heng boarded the Express sometime during or after December 8098 SC.

The context of these Events gives us one more date: March 7th 8099 SC, the day March 7th joined the Astral Express Crew. Which means the Express grew in strengh extremely fast. I took the Year 8099 SC because otherwise March 7th joining the Express wouls be considered part of the Present events on the given timeline. Anyways that means that, Sunday and the TB aside, the currently known AE crew came together within 4 months. With Himeko and March7th forming their known bond extremely fast. Maybe because March was the first Girl who joined the AE Crew.

With Himeko brushing March7th Hair, she's also the one ask "Will this be the last outfit for today?". Which means Himeko had the greatest Influence on the March 7th we know now.

Now reaching into territory of Headcanon/Assumption, i like the Idea that Himeko was the first one March 7th saw upon being freed from the ice. And thus bonded with to the point of them interacting the most.

Regardless, the Timeline shows that Himeko had to learn act as a Leader, Guide and Parent extremely fast. Even if Welt and Dan Heng were mature enough. Because the Nameless of the Astral Express became a proper faction rather suddenly.
