Bunnies Are NOT Good Easter Gifts
Listen, friends, I have to get serious for a second here.
This is Asriel. You may have seen me post about her. Like all good pet owners, I love her. Sheâs my little baby girl.
And yes, she loves walks! She also loves cuddles and flowers and pets! People have fully stopped their cars on the streets to tell me how cute she is. They stop and ask if they can pet her or hold her. They ask if they can feed her a blade of grass or a clover. And I usually say yes (provided the lawn in question doesnât use pesticides) because Asriel loves attention and she loves getting a little sun and a little exercise.
But then I always hear it. Every single time I walk her, itâs inevitable. Someone will say, âWhat a great idea! We should look into getting a bunny!â
STOP
Or at least pause. Iâm here to tell you a few things about bunny ownership that are less glamorous than when I walk her in the park.
Rabbits poop. I know what youâre thinking, youâre thinking, âlol my dog is a poop machine!â but you donât get it. If you dismiss this then you have no idea how much a bunny poops.
This is Asriels litter box after one day. I came home from work to this. Doesnât look like a lot? Imagine if I forgot to clean it one day. Picture this doubled. Picture it tripled. I clean her litter box twice a day, three times if you count the one in her sleeping pen. It is required that I do this, or else she will get sick, and so will people who come into my apartment. And on that note
Just because MY bunny is trained, doesnât mean YOUR bunny can be trained. Not all rabbits will poop or pee in the litter box. Not all rabbits walk on a leash. Not all rabbits want to cuddle. Not all rabbits want to be picked up. You didnât raise Asriel, and you didnât see me train her. So you donât know that I got her at a mere month old (the older a rabbit is, the harder they are to train). You didnât see me follow her around the apartment for weeks with rubber gloves on. You didnât see me spray her with a water bottle for trying to eat the carpet. You didnât see me observe her behavior as carefully as possible so as to conform to her behavior, rather than expecting to train her in the same manner as a cat or a dog.
Rabbits have very specific diets. This isnât like most pets where you can buy a specific brand of food and leave it at that. Asriel requires a harmonious mix of hay, pellets, vegetables, and fresh greens to keep her healthy and strong. The diets will vary depending on the individual rabbit and breed. ALL rabbits require CONSTANT access to hay for fiber and dental health. Pellets and vegetables (especially carrots, because they are high in sugar) should be given in limited amounts. Going against this diet is DANGEROUS. Digestion problems are very real in rabbits. Fun fact - did you know a rabbit canât vomit? They have no way of expelling toxic substances aside from allowing their body to (at least attempt to) digest it.
Rabbits eat and chew on everything. This is not a habit you will break them of. It is in their nature. They see a cord hanging from the wall and it looks just like a delicious blade of grass to them. I have heard of rabbits eating entire textbooks, clothes, toys, cords, plastic, chewing on metal. They do not know how to differentiate between your favorite necklace and a tasty piece of celery.
Rabbits are EXPENSIVE. Asriel has to go to a specialized vet who has his office set up out of town. We have to take a cab to get there because no bus lines run there. Thatâs a $50 cab ride in addition to the $300 vet bill. Having her spayed alone was $350.
Vet visits are NOT optional Just because America doesnât have any laws requiring rabbits be vaccinated or spayed/neutered, doesnât mean you can neglect the healthcare of your rabbit. Regular veterinary visits are necessary to detect small issues before they become big ones. You need to seek out a vet who specializes in rabbit care and rabbit surgery. Spaying or neutering your rabbit will prevent hormone-driven behaviors and uterine cancer in female rabbits.
Rabbits need lots of space Bunnies have powerful hind legs that need to stretch, hop, jump, and run. A bunny trapped in a cage all day not only risks stress (which reduces your rabbitâs lifespan), but also depression and even muscular dystrophy. They need exercise and lots of freedom.
Rabbits bite and scratch Even Asriel does. As used as she is to being handled, when she wants down, sheâll let you know quick. They have sharp teeth and will nip if you do something they donât like. Hell, some rabbits are cranky and will nip for no reason. Not all rabbits like to be handled. Just because Asriel cuddles under your chin doesnât mean every rabbit will.
âBut Typhon!â You may be saying, âWhy even keep a rabbit if itâs so much work? Donât you love your rabbit?â
YES! Asriel is the sweetest bunny and I am the luckiest bunny owner to have her. Dogs and cats are lots of work too, and nobody would argue that it isnât worth keeping one.
But hereâs the thing âŚ
Every year, thousands of rabbits are adopted or purchased as Easter presents.
Every year, thousands of rabbits are abandoned, set free (a death sentence for domestic rabbits), or die because the people who receive them as presents do not know how to care for them.
It breaks my little bunny-loving heart. These are not bad people. Iâm sure they wanted the best for their bunny. Iâm sure they tried their best and just didnât expect the commitment, or didnât know any better.
Adopting a bunny means a commitment of 10 or more years. It is a financial and emotional commitment, and one that you should not take on without some SERIOUS research and preparation. I have sunk thousands of dollars into the care of my bunny, and while I cannot say enough that it is worth every penny, I bought her knowing what I was getting myself into.
So please, please, please say it with me âŚ
Bunnies are not good Easter presents
Bunnies are not good Easter presents
BUNNIES ARE NOT GOOD EASTER PRESENTS
BUNNIES ARE NOT GOOD EATER PRESENTS
DO NOT BUY A CHILD A BUNNY FOR EASTER
DO NOT BUY ANYONE A BUNNY FOR EASTER UNLESS THEY ARE FULLY PREPARED TO CARE FOR IT
If youâve read all of this and you still think youâd like a bunny - great! Goodness knows the shelters will be full of them a few weeks after Easter. I recommend giving https://rabbit.org/ a visit, and perhaps picking up a copy of The Rabbit Handbook by Karen Gendron. You should also do some research on veterinary care in your area, as well as calling up local pet stores to make sure they carry the supplies youâll need to care for your rabbit. Make sure to get the supplies BEFORE you get the rabbit. No bunny should come home and not have a pen to sleep in.
Bunnies are great pets. They have a wide range of personalities just like cats and dogs. They can be shy, friendly, playful, skittish, cuddly, or nippy. All rabbits are good rabbits. I just beg of you, this Easter season, to remember that they are living creatures. They need constant care and attention, and while itâs well worth the effort, itâs not something to take lightly.
Asriel and I thank you for listening.
Living animals are not âlessonsâ for your children. Itâs not their job to teach your child responsibility. They deserve a happy, fulfilled life with the best of care.
A BUNNY IS NOT JUST FOR EASTER!
iâve owned a bunny since january and this is so true
UNLESS YOU ARE WELL PREPARED TO TAKE CARE OF ONE DONT GET A BUNNY FOR EASTER
Just buy your kid a toy instead.

I think next thursday is gonna be the best day of my entire life tbh
reblog for next thursday to be the best day of your life
Call Me By Your Name (2017)
How do you define a person? Or their concept of "self"? Â How important is the concept of self in the day-to-day life of a person?
Let's take Kim Kardashian West for example,  She's famous for a sex tape, her TV show, and that's about it. But you know clearly who she wants you to think she is. Every move is carefully planned so that she never breaks character.  But does anyone know how much she really loves salads (I hear you Buzzfeed, I hear ya)?  Or wearing two pairs of Spanx⢠at once?  We were sure we had her pegged down. She's just some gal that is famous for being famous...
Then she was a victim of an armed robbery. She backed off of public life and social media.
and
everyone
just
freaked
out.
"But Kim's a social butterfly!" They shout, " She can't live with out likes."
But is she?
We only see people as we think they should be or how we want to see them. We see the people we love as supermen and women. We see the co-worker that we can't stand as an ass. But really we all are both.
Kim might be a social butterfly, a smart businesswoman, and sex symbol. A perfect victim. Some icon of modern excess,
OR
She could be a woman who was in the right (and later wrong) place at the right time.
My point on Mrs. West is that I know it's easy to claim that you know a person. Celebs have no privite life . We see their every move.
It's even easier with people you know. Â Your friends and co-workers. You see them everyday, you have to know them. What could they be hiding from you? Â People are not like boxes that you can store things away in , you can't just tape up things inside, right?
and then we get surprised when our family members suffer from depression or anxiety. Or our friend comes out as gay.
People are not one thing. People are not a mix of easy to understand things like a batch of cookie dough.
You can't peg a person.
You can try.
But you can never understand a person compleatly. Â We are all icebergs. There is more below the serfice.
I wonder what people have me pegged as ? Am I the good sister?  The life of the party? Am I a weird person that you went to school with? Am I the girl with some  major thing wrong and bad and evil about me?  Could I be many things to many people? Or nothing much to a few.
I claim to be a good person and then I'm mean. Â I say I love Jesus, and then I use his name in vain. I am a giant hypocrite. I can't make up my mind on what role I should play. Â I'm a good girl, I must be crazy about boys and horses and Usher and Jesus.
The lines are on the page, the cues are set. I know the part.
So why do I flub the lines and break character.
Ever since I was a girl, I've always thought that there was someting wrong with me. Something bad and evil and wrong. If I could just love Jesus more, just be a bit thinner, a bit quieter, a bit more normal. I would be ok. If I was just a bit more femminine. If I just dated the right boy.
I would be good and pure and normal. I would play the part of the dutiful daughter , the good friend, the perfect help-meet. Â I can read about the proverbs 31 woman all day long.
But I can't be her. I can't be happy and free and "the kind of woman that the devil says ' OH CRAP SHE'S UP' when her boots hit the floor" girl. OR keep on blogging about my perfect man or how Satan is hurting us. I try and try to be pure and honest, but I'm too far gone.
Maybe I'm a mess.
Maybe you're a mess.
Maybe someday I'll get to have the movie moment. I'll be Neil reading Shakespere or Lili standing in for her wife's missing model.
and
it
will
click.
the world will make sense. and i'll be who i should be.
or at least I'll know what I need to fix.
But until then, I'll keep you posted and leave you with an quote from good old uncle walt...
" very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes." - w.w.

I live for agender Odo (from Star Trek Waypoint, 2017).
I looked it up and this is Kira going âI canât do this mother/daughter pilgrimage thing because my mom died during the occupationâ, and then everyoneâs immediately like âIâLL BE YOUR SYMBOLIC MOMâ Iâm crying??? and need to read Star Trek comics maybe??????????
a family can be *squints; counts* 8 moms of varying race, gender, and solidity, and their symbolic daughter
Danica Roem refusing to shit talk Bob Marshall, the self-proclaimed Chief Homophobe bathroom bill author incumbent she defeated, by saying âI donât do that to constituentsâ is simultaneously impressively gracious and the sickest fucking burn Iâve seen in a while.
âI donât attack my constituents. Bob is my constituent now.â
I hope her remark is prominently displayed in history books for the next hundred years.
