this is NOT well written i haven't edited it, and it's not worded how i want it to be. i just needed to get it off my chest

i hate when ppl on here talk about gun control not bc i disagree with them but because they have never tried to explain these concepts to someone who genuinely believes their gun will protect them from the usa government if they need it to (they won't bc they agree w the current administration) and had to accept that some people honestly don't care if people/children are dying in schools/the street/to gun violence in general bc they genuinely value that gun over other human beings and like hey! i am so happy for australia's lack of gun violence! i would love for you to convince the conservatives who vote against gun control of this! i've been trying! im not saying this for pity, but my middle school had a shooting*! trust i am doing my part to try and push for that legislation but until old tom down the road understands that his gun isn't going to protect him from the government on a day that he believes is inevitable there will be no gun control! and that sucks! and idk why i picked my career! it stresses me the fuck out to be in school buildings!!!

also like i know i'm overly sensitive about this! and it's not that i can't accept criticism of the us, i am VERY critical of it!!! but like i've grown up in a conservative area. i've tried to explain the benefits of gun control. i've tried to explain that the government isn't going to show up at your door and steal all your guns and kill your family if we pass gun reform! it doesn't matter to them bc the NRA's pro-gun propaganda is so baked into every part of our society and these people genuinely believe they NEED that gun. people in my hometown still think that our shooting wouldn't have happened if the teacher in the room had been armed. and tbf no one died. but still. they genuinely believe that would have solved it. when in fact the whole thing was solved with the teacher throwing a basketball at the shooter's head and tackling him through the door.

like i get it. gun control worked for you once you passed it. and i am OVERJOYED that it did. I'm thrilled that it worked and you don't have to worry about it. it just won't work here until we can convince people they won't need that automatic rifle or whatever to protect their families. and that's not exactly working so far.

and i'm not saying people from outside the us can't/shouldn't talk about it, like pls do, you can say whatever you want! and i'm not saying i worded this well or that this is a good take. i'm just saying it's really hard to convince people who have spent their entire lives believing that this gun will save them that they don't need it, actually, and that they should let regulations exist.

*nobody died and it really wasn't that bad but like. wow! it sure happened! and now i have a hard time watching people who aren't from here talk to americans like we're stupid like yeah, getting rid of the guns would be SO beneficial. but the propaganda means that it's not that easy
