How do you feel about the ending? I keep going back and forth on it. Part of me loves its seemingly clean simplicity, while part of me rails against that very same cleanness and simplicity for being so drastically different to every other aspect of the entire series. But then I think that the very difference is what may make it so nice. But THEN...you get the point.
I do get your point. Look, I am a huge Isobelle fan and this book had so many expectations put on it, it would have been impossible for her to live up to them all. But, that ending …. missed the point of the series. It was rushed and I don’t believe it was Isobelle’s original intention. I feel like the series was about Elspeth fighting for difference to be embraced, and accepting her own unique qualities. The ending then sequestered her away again, severing the ties she had built over the entire series, almost like we were back at book 1. I personally did not want a fairy tale ending but this ending fell short logically.
Oh man, I politely but firmly disagree! I think I’m in the minority here but I actually loved the ending for a lot of reasons–it’s 1am so I will summarize instead of writing an essay, though.
1. I felt like it would have been way too easy in some ways if she hadn’t gone with Sentinel. The fact that she knows her relationships will end far sooner/differently than people are expecting looms throughout the whole series and colors all her interactions. To me, letting her go back to Obernewtyn (or even staying in the Red Land with Dragon, where return to Obernewtyn is a real possibility) would have undermined the emotional significance of her sacrifice in leaving Obernewtyn and her whole life behind. I also think it would have undercut one of the aspects about Elspeth I have always admired–her determination to build a future she knows in her bones she won’t be allowed to live in.
2. There would have been a parting from her most beloved friends no matter what, since she never would have stopped Maruman and Gahltha from going to the free running barud, and they would never have given up going. I really believe that the Elspeth we have seen throughout the series would never choose her human friends over her animal friends. Maruman is her oldest and dearest friend in the world, and Gahltha has been with her through so much. I’d argue that they are the most important connections she has, even above Rushton or Dameon or Dragon. There are so many points in the series where she takes comfort from their presence in a way she doesn’t experience with human companions. After everything she has gone through, I do think going with Sentinel in the end is the best reward for Elspeth.
2b. Elspeth experiences a lot of guilt in the series because she believes the Innle legend to be a total fabrication. I don’t think she would be able to handle the guilt of having to explain to every animal she meets post-Sentinel why the free running barud is not open to them.
If I were to change anything about the ending, it might be having it end when they actually reach Eden and having Sentinel explain that they need a human to open it, or something similar, where Elspeth’s presence is necessary from a plot perspective. But as it is, I think it’s lovely that the ending is Elspeth finally in a place where no one wants her to be anything but herself, and where no one is ever going to demand anything of her that she doesn’t want to give.
I love that you liked the ending! I also completely agree that Elspeth cared about her animal friends above everyone else. It's great to hear other people's thoughts on this series!

Brown eyes surveyed me from a craggy, tan face. His hair was brown too, and worn longer than lowland fashion dictated. He was about Rushton’s age and wore the unmistakable garb of a Druid armsman.

Malik was the same solidly muscled, grey-eyed, grey-haired man as he had been the last time I had seen him in Sador, but he wore his arrogance with a vicious new edge...
