He was given a name that meant light because to his parents, Elio was the sun, and he could practically do no wrong. It wasn't that he was raised to be completely wild, cruel, or selfish, but Elio was born into a family who only wanted to give him the best of everything, and boy, they could afford it.
The Torres family owned a string of luxury resorts, dude ranches, hotels, and most importantly (at least to a young, soccer-obsessed Elio), a stake in the LA Galaxy. One of his most treasured memories is taking a picture with David Beckham when the Galaxy signed him. Over the years, the pair have taken several other pictures together, including some with a young Elio holding the trophy when the Galaxy won the MLS cup.
Growing up in the Torres family may not have taught Elio the value of a dollar, but they did make sure to teach him the value of hard work, at least in some regards. He was enrolled in a private school with a focus on both athletics and education until he hit high school and transferred to a public school purely on the basis of its status as having one of the best soccer teams in Texas. While academia wasn't exactly his passion, he was an intelligent boy who got good grades, even if the primary motivation behind it was to some day have a killer college application. The family reputation, being a legacy applicant, and hefty donations didn't exactly hurt, so him being recruited to Stanford to play soccer wasn't exactly a huge surprise. He studied Business so he'd have something to fall back on that wasn't just his parents money and his killer right foot, but his goal was to play in MLS.
Elio was good, but he wasn't a superstar. The team were one the better performers on the West Coast, and he did in fact achieve his dream of being drafted to the LA Galaxy, even if he was a third round pick. He played a handful of seasons as a bench warmer and had the time of his life, before a severely torn ACL took him out for good. Surgery, rehab, physical therapy, none of them got him back on track with his pro career, and he was dropped from the team he'd spent his whole life supporting.
With his soccer career over, Elio wasn't really sure what he wanted to do with his life, so he did a bit of everything. It wasn't as if he needed a job. He travelled, stayed at some of his parents' luxury resorts and hotels, played golf, surfed, and even tried to run a sports bar before it became too much like hard work and he sold it after three years.
Blackstone Ridge has been the place he's called home for most of his life, and where he's been mainly stationed the last few years, for no other real reason than he likes it. The idea was that he remain close to home while he, in his father's words, "figures out his next steps". Elio still isn't sure exactly what his next steps are going to be, but one thing is for sure; he's going to make sure he has fun getting there.
