You'd think Shinichi would be angry with Hattori, and don't get me wrong he is quite annoyed at him, however he doesn't react the way you would think he does.

Why? Because Shinichi knows that Hattori is always comparing his relationship with Kazuha with Shinichi's and Ran's and knows that deep down his best friend is terrified of his relationship breaking up in a similar way and so in to reassure himself, he's trying to fix it so he knows that even if he and Kazuha ever have a hard time or even break up they could get back together again.

I never mind you going "my fanfic!" because that just means this food already exists for me to eat and I am a starving dog ready to pounce.

AND YES! When writing this, i was also thinking about how Ran does the same thing and for similar reasons. These teenagers are full of insecurities due to the expectations pushed on them by everyone around them.

I can imagine all the times they're called "perfect couples" and then Ran is in her room in the dark waiting for Shinichi to text her back and it not being about a case or how he's doing but just for a casual conversation and wonders if this is the perfection people strive for in romance.

Heiji becoming self-conscious of behaviors he has similar to Shinichi's in case that what drove him and Ran apart even though Kazuha has told Ran herself one of her favourite aspects of Heiji is seeing him as he works and doesn't mind him becoming a bit case-focused from time to time.

Or Ran seeing Kazuha who doesn't mind Heiji running off for cases from time to time and thinking she's the issue because it does upset her how Shinichi does that to her and thinking she just has to suck up her hurt and 'stop being a baby'.
