1. What’s your blog title from?
The phrase “lions and tigers and bears oh my” from The Wizard of Oz (movie), but with features of my favorite fandoms replacing the animal names.
2. What movie have you watched most recently? What did you think of it?
A 1985 coming-of-age movie called “Fandango” that takes place in the early 70s. It’s hilariously funny and poignant and artistic. You should watch it.
3. What are you looking forward to right now?
Retreating to my Special Place In The Woods with no wifi, tv, or phone service. I don’t know when I’ll be able to go. I hope soon.
4. What’s your drink of choice?
5. What’s your hair routine? Anything special?
Comb it daily, wash it every couple of days, and in between harbor the vague nagging feeling that it’s a metaphor for all the inevitable ways I’m failing as an adult
6. What’s your favorite way to travel? Is there a mode of travel you haven’t done that you want to?
Train. I’ve only been able to do short trips, though. My dream would be to take a very long train trip, but my health makes this extremely unlikely to ever happen.
7. Favorite month and why?
All months are more or less equally fraught yet tinged with joy and hope.
8. Favorite time of the day and why?
I hate getting up early, but when something forces me to, I’m struck by how stunningly beautiful mornings are, and I tell myself “Remember this: early mornings are worth getting up for.” But I’m shocked anew each time.
9. Do you play or follow any sports?
No. But I something think it might be fun to become someone who does. It may require additional lifetimes to do and be all the interesting things that are out there.
10. What song has been stuck in your head a lot lately?
“What you’re doing” by The Beatles. Let me take this opportunity to say that if you aren’t familiar with lesser-known/less popular Beatles tracks, you’re missing out.
12. What’s something you’ve learned recently?
I’m learning about different research study designs. Probably not something I will have any practical use for, but it’s interesting.
13. If you could give a TED talk on anything, what would you talk about?
How we all need to go back to writing poetry for our friends, drawing for the fun of it, singing and playing an instrument as casual self-entertainment, reading for pleasure, and taking long walks in the woods. Also fuck AI; stop tearing down nice old affordable houses to build million dollar McMansions; quit making all decor in neutral colors; stop buying enormous SUVs; stop designing living rooms around TVs; stop designing cities around cars; quit cutting down trees and decimating green spaces to make way for development; and stop blasting your music without headphones on nature trails & public transportation.
14. What’s a piece of advice you find yourself giving a lot?
Start using your local library instead of buying or streaming every single piece of media you want to consume. If they don’t have it, ask the librarians to buy it or order it from another library.
15. What’s a piece of advice you’d give yourself five years ago?
Don’t keep waiting for your health to get “better” before you do That Thing, because it’s just going to get worse. Learn to accept that you’re disabled, and make the most of every day.
16. Do you believe in luck and superstition? Do you carry any lucky items?
No. The “luckiest” person I’ve ever met was born on a Friday the 13th. I believe we can make our own “luck” to a certain extent through good choices and kindness, but painful and unfair things can and do still happen to anyone.
17. Are you musical? Would you ever perform for an audience?
Yes, and I do. I will not be elaborating on this.

19. What would you wish someone would ask you?
“We have this medical treatment that will permanently fix the worst thing that’s wrong with you without any bad effects. Can we give it to you right now?”
20. If you could vacation anywhere in time, where are you going? How long would you stay? What would you do/who would you see?
1950s/60s in either my current city, my hometown, or the town one of my parents grew up in. Mostly I want to observe what people’s lives and routines are really like, what design/home decor/fashion are like, what the culture is like. I’d stick around just long enough to collect some good data but not long enough to mess up the future 😉
