We are (obviously) absent for quite a while, since all our members lost interest in maintaining this blog. I (Elaran, as always), too, am not an active Tumblr user anymore, even with my main blog. However, I’ve found that reddit is a lot easier for me to answer any questions or other such requests. I was made a moderator to /r/Sindarin shortly after I joined, and I’ve been helping the folk ever since.

Here, even in our most active times, you needed to wait for days before getting an answer, but all my replies on /r/Sindarin took less than a day, usually just a few hours. As the only member of the Lambengolmor actively helping with translation requests, I invite you to /r/Sindarin if you need proper translations.

Greetings! In fact, we have no special attested word for 'thunder' anywhere: apparently this is one of the lexical spots Tolkien actually missed…

However, I have good news: there is a word funda- in Parma Eldalamberon 16, which was tentatively interpreted per editors as a verb 'to thunder'. Assuming the derivation from a stem like *PHUD, Helge Fauskanger updated it into hunda- which yielded further a gerund *hundië, 'a thunder, thundering'.

This was used by Fauskanger in his Bible translations; such a word would result in *funnad 'thunder' in Sindarin. A guess as good as any other…

So, why not rephrase them?Quenya: Na carë indómë Hlócëo.Sindarin: Caro den i•innas Lhûg. (though it was a draft, and I believe No carnen i•innas Lhûg could have been better and less ambiguous.)

Greetings! You’ve done amazing work with Quenya, even found the extrapolation huru made by Helge Fauskanger! The only addition I can make is that now, from PE22, we have an attested word for ‘only’, rië, so:

Rainë huru ná, ëa írë rië.

Iaur; ancient, old.

This word exist in a name in The Return of the King, in the form Ioreth, from a contracted iaur –> ior + eth, a feminine ending. Thus Ioreth, Iorien, Ioril as feminine forms, and Ioron as masculine form. Also Iornis, Iorves for “old/ancient woman” and “Iorwen” for “old maid”, and “Iordir, Iorven” for “old man, old husband” and Iorphen for “old person”.

Lathra- and lasta- are words for “listen”; the former can also be interpreted as “to eavesdrop”. Thus I propose the following names:

Lathril, feminine, Lastor, neutral, Lathron, masculine. Also Lastanir/Lathranir, “listener (man)”, Lastanis/Lathranis, “listener (woman)”.

Greetings! It is always such a challenge to discuss the numerals! As I see, your question is two-fold. The answer to the first, ‘How to say twenty in Quenya and Sindarin’, is strictly “We have no explicit sources”. But from what we know about the Eldarin numerals in general, it is safe to conclude that:

Sindarin tadphae (tad 'two’ + phae 'ten’), tadphaenui 'twentieth’;

Quenya yúquain (yú 'both, pair’ + quean 'ten’), yúquainëa 'twentieth’. [Helge Fauskanger actually uses _yúquean_, but I’m sure the shortened form _quain_ is made specifically for the longer compounds.]

The second part, 'How to write 20 in Eldarin digits’, can only be shown in picture! These are the possible ways:

This is the normal Eldarin duodecimal number expression, literally '8-1’, that is, 8*1+1*12 (Elvish numbers are written right-to-left, from the largest valued to the lowest)

And if you wish to follow the practice of Middle-Earth Men and use the Elvish digits to write decimally as we do, then this is '0-2’, that is, 0*1+2*10.

Hello everyone! You may have noticed the Tengwar explosion in our blog today. I (Elaran) was away for a few weeks and my companions had no way of making Tengwar pictures like the ones I make. And even if I was present, I would still be slower to respond to Tengwar requests because it needs much more work than just writing here.

Thus, we wanted to warn you about our general lateness with Tengwar requests. If the Tengwar is optional but quick answers are needed, then we suggest you come back later with the phrase we translated and ask for the transcription. This way, you can get your translation results much quicker and have the transcription later on.

For those who are not familiar with the terminology, Tengwar is the well known Elvish alphabet. Quenya and Sindarin are the two main Elvish languages. And I want to add that we cannot “translate” into alphabets, nor “transcribe” into languages. When someone asks us to do these, we get confused and try to do all of them at once! Resulting with very slow responses.
