As I reflect on about two years since I figured out Iām a lesbian, I mourn the people who use their religion as an excuse to hate. Being gay has made me a better Christian, and I truly believe that. People talk about hearts getting broken open and mine was shattered.
I prayed so long for God to take this away and He didnāt. Iām still unlearning so many toxic things that organized religion taught me, and Iāve come to terms that (in the tone of Gagaās Born This Way) God makes no mistakes.
That phrase is triggering to some. But I fully believe that God made people the way they are when it comes to being queer.
So to the 18 year old me in community college, who thought she was going to hell for being bisexual, I love you. I see you and your lovely broken heart that holds compassion for so many people, and Iām telling you that your love has gotten stronger and your faith has been bolstered.
To anyone struggling with religion and queerness, I see you. Youāre not alone. We exist. We have always existed. We will continue to exist and love more deeply.
