Redesigning characters is definitely a passion of mine. I think the biggest thing to keep in mind is always having a purpose and intent behind the redesign. In my opinion, redesigning solely because one thinks one can do better is kind of mean-spirited, and you can circumvent that by just having a focus behind the project.

For my She-Ra stuff, my focus is kind of bringing to life what the world felt like to me as a kid when I was playing with the original toyline and watching the Filmation show and everything - trying to age that up and bring that into a more modern lens.

In terms of the actual practise, I think that ideally it's a LOT of studying (though it can also be fun to design off-the-cuff for a character you don't know, but I'm assuming that's not what you mean lol). Being distinctly familiar with all aspects of a character helps your designs feel more rooted in the franchise you're coming from, and I think that helps it resonate with fans. For instance, with my Scorpia design, I elected to make her larger in build and visibly older than most of the cast. This decision was based on her 2008 Classics bio, which casts her as a warrior queen who ruled even before the Horde arrived, but it also carries the bonus of being identifiable by 2018 fans, since she was buff and white-haired in that show. All the while, all the choices I'm making with regards to her silhouette and the placement and shape of her armour are specifically lifted from her Filmation design (which, fun fact, may have been created by Bruce Timm, from what I can tell).

You're looking for the perfect balance between your own vision and homage to what came before.

LMAOO I think the key difference is that 2018 Entrapta is a princess with a cute emotionally stunted goth boyfriend and my Entrapta is a colonised Horde citizen under a warlord who feels nothing but rage and schadenfreude

I can totally get how it could be disorienting tho 😂😂😂
