Bit of a (gureshin I miss you) rant below :

I come back after leaving this manga alone for a while (tired of no shinya) and honestly I fully agree with you guys. It feels like recycling, and... cheap recycling at that 😭

A bit of an unpopular opinion, maybe, but all the things that make gureshin special are lacking in mik*yuu. Mika and yuu as characters lack substance, maybe because a lot of their background has yet to be revealed but as it stands now, the basis of their current relationship is pretty one linear and shallow, almost 90% is fed by yuu's obsession --which is often whimsical: his family is guren (confronts mika), his family is the squad (confronts mika), his family is mika alone (confronts everyone) . With guren and shinya (and the whole guren squad really) if you read ca16 and ra19 there's actual development, they're well constructed characters that were forced into situations that changed them but, in the end, imo they're tragically human

Guren's anxiety about shinya not finding out now?

Shinya's own disbelief at the idea guren could knowingly let his men be slaughtered, his breakdown and brief revelation that it could be mahiru, that it had to be her because that's not guren! (and his own introspection with his byakko, how guren changed his perspective in life because he does not give up, even with every odd against him, when it's not comfortable or logical. His reason to be attached (attracted if you will) is something painful and pitiful and stubborn, it's humanity, the impossible and improbable being challenged.

What.... can we say about mikayuu? Where is the depth? Yuu is "dumb" , Mika is exasperated and with enough pushing agreeing, ok, we got it! 😭

I mean..... light years of a difference between the 2 relationships . I honestly feel it's a wonder this manga is still alive because without guren carrying it (and guren squad!) it's genuinely so boring, we're stuck in the mikayuu loop in aeternum.

omg that scene!!! That scene is so good. Totally agree. WWX also never saw Wen Ning as a tool, or as lesser than himself, even when he became a fierce corpse. His relationship with Wen Ning strikes such a sharp contrast w his relationship with jc and shows how truly lacking and threadbare that bond was on jiang cheng's part. Wen Ning is just the best. Man committed treason after meeting WWX one time ONE TIME, bc he recognizes what a good person he was. He rushed over to Lotus Pier to help. Like?!?! JC KNEW WWX HALF OF HIS LIFE and was like "I can't do shit for u while you're repaying my life debt, soz! btw gonna tell everyone you're unhinged & their enemy xx "

Also what I find fascinating about Wen Ning is he never blamed WWX for not managing to protect the Wens. He never blamed WWX for Wen Qing's death- even though she sacrificed herself thinking the Clan leaders would keep their word and not attack. Wen Ning himself walked in to sacrifice himself. Like ofc WWX isn't to blame for any of these things but lord knows the absence of actual culpability never stopped jiang cheng from dumping all his shit at WWX's door. People blow so much smoke up jc's ass for failing to distract the Wen soldiers and getting himself caught and finding out why Wen Zhuliu was called the core melting hand- which he did not in fact know before hand. Sure let's forget he regretted everything the second he woke up after WWX rescued him and tried to straight up strangle him. Even the fact that he doesn't share that at the end or throw it in WWX's face is blown up to mean jc has changed he's a different man. His tofu heaRt is finally visible to all!! Yeah no. He's back to clashing w Wen Ning in the extras. Maybe 20% he didn't say it bc he had a small TEMPORARY window of self awareness after the golden core revelation but 80% was no doubt that he realized even in this WWX's sacrifice dwarfed his to such a degree that it rendered it meaningless and laughable. He was just going to make himself look like a clown all over again. "I tried to save you but got caught then you had to save me and I tried to strangle you and then you had to give up your core for me and then I led a siege and killed u & everyone you were protecting"- doesn't quite carry the debt ppl think it does?!

Banquet Proposal

Manspreading Champion Jin Guangshan is trying to pressure Jiang Cheng into marrying Jiang Yanli into the Jin clan.  Because this is the cultivation world, where everyone reflexively agrees with the most powerful man in the room like he’s Frank Sinatra and they’re the Rat Pack, the whole room starts pressuring Jiang Cheng to agree.  

Then Wei Wuxian comes striding in and suggests the radical idea of asking a woman’s opinion about her own marriage. He tries to pressure Jiang Cheng into agreeing with him. Today is Pressure Jiang Cheng Day. Every day for the next several months is going to be Pressure Jiang Cheng Day.

Jiang Cheng stands up and agrees that it should be left up to his sister, citing his late father’s beliefs so that everyone will know that this unconventional behavior isn’t his fault. This is a pickle for him; he knows his sister wants to marry Jin Zixuan, but it’s not a good political alliance for the Jiangs right now, which is the opposite of the situation when his parents first made the match. While saying all this he takes the opportunity to get in a dig at Wei Wuxian for meddling.

Jiang Yanli sadly says, thanks for the offer, but the Jiang Clan is just coming back from being massacred, and I have, like, SO much laundry, I can’t even. It’s not that I don’t want to be with you, Jixuan honey; I would just rather scrub blood off of the courtyard.

Jin Zixuan suddenly realizes that being dumped in front of a bunch of your peers is not as fun when you’re catching instead of pitching.

Clan Leader Yao is completely flummoxed by this whole “let young people decide things” concept and hopes it goes out of fashion soon.

The only really happy person in the room is Jin Guangyao, who is looking for a scapegoat for his upcoming villainy. Wei Wuxian will be a perfect fit.

Not Quite Like Old Times

We ended the previous episode in daylight, with Lan Wangji putting Wei Wuxian and swordpoint and declaring his undying love lecturing him about his lack of sword skills.

We start this episode in full night, with the two of them sitting on a roof together. Presumably they spent the missing scenes getting dinner in the mess hall, doing some laundry, and definitely not making out. Fic writers, do your thing.

Finally, FINALLY, Lan Wangji has chilled out enough to actually sit and listen to Wei Wuxian, instead of yelling at and/or physically attacking him. The Zoloft is really helping!

Wei Wuxian is indulging in romantic recollections of their first rooftop encounter. Lan Wangji, who has loved him since he first laid eyes on him and who wrote a whole song with an entire music video about their love, featuring that very same rooftop encounter, shuts him down so completely he might as well have whipped out Bichen again.

First he corrects his description of events by pointing out they were fighting, not talking, back then. Then when Wei Wuxian continues in his charming, smiley reminiscing vein, Lan Wangji says “things change, how could they stay the same” with a deep, sad, weariness.

He seems like an old man in this moment, and I feel for him, really, I do. But he’s not the one who’s carrying the actual essence of death around inside him. Wei Wuxian is being much more generous in this interaction than Lan Wangji is.

Wei Wuxian thanks him for not narkng to Jiang Yanli about the whole talisman/forced suicide/ghost hummer/ghost flaying thing he did back in Yiling. Like there is any way Lan Wangji would ever tell Jiang Yanli, of all people, something like that about Wei Wuxian.  He’s lying to his own brother to cover for Wei Wuxian, and Wei Wuxian totally doesn’t get it.
