I've noticed in uptick in posts online saying that we shouldn't judge the morality of fictional characters in order media analysis because "the characters are narrative tools that move the plot forward" and I don't know how to say this but sometimes in order to properly analyze a story, you have the judge the characters actions as if they were real people because the point of their stories is that the main characters is a bad person who fucking sucks

These are examples off the top of my head of stories where in order to fully appreciate them you have to be willing to judge the actions of the main characters, which isn't the same the thing as saying the story is bad or the author is problematic, because sometimes the intended audience reaction is "wow what the main character just did is fucking awful"

Like excuse me if I don't think "we should never should judge a main character by their actions, but rather how entertaining their role in the narrative is" is going to result in better media literacy

the problem with visual novels is that they are novels, but they are almost exclusively sold on video game distribution platforms, which means that they're novels being read by gamers who are by and large entirely unequipped to critique that medium
