Okay not to be a dick but I fucking hate the new "youth liberation" trend going on on tumblr where they think children are more marginalized than north koreans and compare basic parental discipline to fascism. Guys there are parts of russia where being gay gets you put in a concentration camp they are not "the most marginalized group of people in the world" and not liking children doesnt make you a nazi. Ughhhh none of you remember the kid who was never told no and it shows
Disliking children, even hating children, is not a moral value judgement. Whether or not someone hates children doesnt make them a fucking fascist. Subjectively hating common childrens behavior doesnt mean that youre an ableist, or a transphobe, or a homophobe, or any of these real accusations ive seen be hurled around recently. Hating something in your head does not mean youre acting upon it. I dont like children but i do not treat them like shit, I treat them like human beings. I just would rather not be around them if it can be avoided
And in a similar vein, discipline is not abuse. Discipline CAN become abusive and there absolutely is a line that shouldnt be crossed with it, but there is in fact a developmental difference between a child and an adult, and a child does in fact need guidance on boundaries and appropriate behavior and needs to understand that their actions have consequences and that they cant react any which way they want just because they have big feelings. And things that make a child uncomfortable or upset are not inherently abusive and I can give you a pretty good smoking gun example of one: children HATE vaccinations. But they need to get vaccinated for their own good. And they need to learn that they're allowed to feel upset and uncomfortable but that doesnt give them the right to behave any way they want because of upset and discomfort. And its a parent's responsibility to put their foot down sometimes and tell their child "no, it doesn't matter that you don't want to get a tetanus shot, you need one. You can hold your stuffie or sit in my lap, but getting your tetanus shot after you stepped on a rusty nail is non-negotiable."
And the way so many of these posts talk about "youth liberation" gives me the impression that they think children have the same life experience as adults, and the ability to make objective decisions for themselves in a way most ADULTS I know cant even do. And im sorry but there does come a point where children need to be told "no." And just because YOU had parents who took discipline to the extreme and crossed the threshold into abuse, doesnt mean that giving kids a bedtime, or saying they cant have mcdonalds for dinner every night, or saying they have to get their tetanus shot whether they like it or not, is abusive. And do not ever claim that children are the most oppressed demographic in the world. Wait long enough and you'll stop being a child; you can't just stop being black, or gay, or trans.
