Νύσιον ἂμ πεδίον, τῇ ὄρουσεν ἄναξ Πολυδέγμων
ἵπποις ἀθανάτοισι, Κρόνου πολυώνυμος υἱός.

Of lovely-haired Demeter, reverend goddess, I begin to sing,
herself and her slim-ankled daughter, whom Hades
seized, and deep-thundering Zeus, the far-sounder, granted her to him,
far away from Demeter of the golden sword and splendid fruit,
while she played with Ocean’s deep-robed daughters
and picked flowers, roses and crocuses and lovely violets,
all through the soft meadow, and irises and hyacinths
and narcissus—which, a trap for the rosy-faced girl,
Gaia brought to life, gratifying the plots of Zeus and the All-receiver—
a wondrous, glittering creation, holy to look upon for all alike,
both immortal gods and mortal humans:
from its root a hundred flower-buds bloomed,
it emitted the sweetest fragrance, and all the broad sky above
and all the earth laughed, and the salt-bitter swell of the sea;
and she, wonderstruck, reached out with both her hands
to take the beautiful delight, but the wide-wayed earth gaped open
upon the Nysian plain, and the lord, the All-taker, rushed at her
with his immortal horses—the many-named son of Cronos.
