BACKSTORY ⸻

Edmund Ferguson was the second youngest of four siblings. Originally from Cardiff, UK, his family was old money, owning property across Europe - while the primary source of their fortune came from industrial.

Being among the youngest of his siblings, he was able to get away with a lot from a young age and he definitely took advantage of it. His upbringing had been so strict, with only the best being acceptable, that he tested his limits everywhere else that he could.

His family moved to Aurora Bay some twenty years ago. Initially he was completely against the move, not wanting to leave his perfect life behind. But once at Aurora Bay, it didn't take long for him to change his mind. Life by the sea and the beautiful weather of the West Coast was definitely an improvement from the rainy city he grew up in.

He followed his father steps into the business world, attending Oxford University and quickly started building his individual wealth in real estate investment while still being part of his family's business. He just preferred doing his own thing - partially as a way to prove himself.

Although his career has always been a priority, Eddie always made time for play. He spent much of his twenties flying out to different cities/countries to go to the most exclusive nightclubs or social events. He gained a bit of a reputation among his peers for this and for being a playboy. Unlike other friends that eventually started getting into serious relationships and settling down, he continued casually dating different models and actresses throughout the years.

Recently he has been more settled in living in Aurora Bay Drive. While work takes up a good amount of his time, he has grown to like the stillness of coming home and spending time with friends and family. The idea of settling down has appealed to him, but he doesn't know if he's ready to make quite that big of a change just yet.

The past couple of weeks had been tumultuous, to say the least. It was baffling how an announcement could alter his lifestyle. Before, he began each day with a run - something that would keep him active and clear minded for the day ahead.

These days, he rose later. Although he still went on his runs, his mornings now included making sure that Valeria was nice and comfortable, ate a nutritious breakfast and stayed away from coffee.

After 10:30 AM his scheduled inundaded with meetings, but today he made sure to fit Nate into it.

"Hey buddy,"

A sad smile formed on his face as he glanced down. "Been a while, huh?"

Once upon a time, his visits were more frequent.

When he was younger, he had more to say...more to feel sorry for. But as he got older, the visits became seldom - convinced that he couldn't spend the rest of his life stuck in the past. 'It's unhealthy' his mom would say, while his father just added that 'didn't understand why he was wasting his time like that. In the end, it worked out for the best.' No one really understood and he stopped expecting them to.

"Your mum's been by, too..." the corners of his lips curved up just slightly as he crouched down to replace the old flowers with the ones he brought. At least there were two people in the world that still cared and remembered his existence. The loss had driven them apart, to the point that they were more strangers than anything else these days. He was convinced that she still blamed him - hell, he still blamed himself. Had their families been more understanding, perhaps she would've been less stressed during the pregnancy. Perhaps their son would've survived. Or maybe this was sick way for the universe punishing him for his indiscretions and immaturity during the short time they were together.

"I'm sorry I don't make it here more often." his voice was barely audible as he spoke, his tone ridden with the guilt that he never outgrew. His fingers gently brushed the dust off the nameplate.

"You probably get this isn't exactly easy for me...." Eddie spoke in his maternal language - something that he would naturally do around family members. Had Nathaniel lived, he would've ensured that he spoke Welsh fluently, as all Fergusons do - even the younger ones born in Aurora Bay. "I, um - I actually have some news." He chuckled lightly, fighting the tears that welled up in his eyes.

Nathaniel would've turned twenty a month ago. Eddie couldn't imagine being a father to a twenty year old! Despite being in his mid thirties now, he still felt too young to be guiding a young adult through life. Hell, he was still figuring out his own shit! But he would trade everything - every cent to his name for the events to have played out differently. To have experienced those sleepless nights; to watch Nathaniel take his first steps; to hear the boy call him 'dad'; to drive him to school; help him with homework; go to his games and even give really shitty relationship advice.

"Jesus - I said I wasn't gonna do this." he mumbled as he wipes the tears with the back of his hand. "Asshole." Eddie added with a small chuckle. "I hope you're happy with that.Just...go easy on your mum when she comes by. She's had it rough."

Like Eddie, Reese was from a wealthy family. They met in private school when he first moved to the states and instantly clicked. Within weeks the pair was dating and months later she revealed the shocking news - she was pregnant. They were fifteen, not even old enough to get their driver's license in the state yet they were on the road to parenthood. He didn't take the news very well, but his dad ( and hers specially) wanted to murder him. How could they be so dumb and irresponsible? This was not a good look for either family. An abortion was the first things suggested by all the parties involved, with the exception of Reese.

Eddie didn't want to be a father and he told her so many times in the beginning. How could he? His birthday was coming up! He was trying to fly out somewhere with his friends, not be buying baby clothes and pick out baby names. But when he heard his son's heartbeat for the first time...even now as a grown man, he couldn't describe the feeling that overcame him. The strong, healthy sound of his son's heartbeat was....everything. Just like that, the pair began to get ready for the birth of their child with minimal emotional support from their parents. He unofficially moved in with Reese and they started getting everything they needed all while keeping it as quiet as they could from peers. She didn't show for most of the pregnancy so hiding it was fairly easy until she reached her third trimester.

His mind blocked out a lot of the events from April 16th. He had gotten into an argument with her parents over something dumb and went to stay at his parents for the night. Sometime that evening he received a call from Reese crying and saying something felt off. Although he tried to reassure her that she was okay, somehow they ended up at Aurora Bay Hospital. Someone mention 'no heartbeat' and the rest was a blur.

A frenzy of doctors, parents rushing to Reese's side to console her as her anguished cries filled the saddened room. No one could've prepared them for this outcome. This was not how it was supposed to happen. He left the room feeling dazed, falling to his feet when his older brother approached him.

"He's dead -Matt, he's dead." was the only legible sentence he could formulate as he cried in his brother's arms.

"Val's pregnant." he shared, finally.

Salvador had been the first person he actually shared the news with. At the time, he'd only been processing the news. It had been something that even as a 'matured' man, he didn't feel quite ready for. Although overwhelmingly anxious, this was something that he yearned for. Something he was determined to do whatever he had to do to get it right. Although he was driving Valeria a little insane at times.

"Don't know what we're having yet, but I'm kinda hoping for a girl. Feels like I've got girl-dad energy, right?" he added, the corners of his lips curling upwards. "She's got a scan coming up though. I'll get to hear the heartbeat" Eddie laughed quietly as he spoke. "I still remember yours, y'know? You were a tiny little shit, but man...you had a presence.."
