The Truly Wonderful Hateplow ( Z_D_ or [email protected] )
Original Aart
Jessica So Ren Tang
Impressive portfolio of embroidery work by Chinese American artist
Embroidery is versatile in mimicking the original object in shape and design but still distinct enough to be recognized as something else. The stitches are soft but substantial, more tangible.
With embroidery, I explore my Asian-American born identity-the dualism of being too Asian to be American, and too American to be Asian.
In my object series, I recreate familiar Asian American objects that take on the visual identity of the original object but reject said identity due to its material.
In my girl series, I replace the facial identity of suggestively posed Asian women with Asian textile patterns. The patterned skin creates a broader spectrum of Asian identity; it becomes more ambiguous and fluid as identity moves between the two.

Its been awhile since I did this contest so probably everyone who cared has moved on, but either way, the theorem this gif is about is Cantor Schroöder Berenstein. It isnt about circles or squares, its about sets! Set theorists like to think about infinite sets, and one of the first things we want to be able to do is compare their sizes.
We say that the size of X is less than or equal the size of Y if there is a way to match each element of X to a different element of Y.
We also say that X and Y have the same size if there is a way of matching each element of X to a different element of Y so that every element of Y has an element of X matched to it. Cantor Schröder Berenstein says that this way of thinking about size behaves the way it should in the sense that:
If |X|≤|Y| and |Y|≤|X| then |X|=|Y| When one of the shapes moves from one corner to the other this represents a way of matching each point in the shape to a different point in the shape it covers. Finally the last move when the two pieces fit together differently shows that our sets are the same size since none of the pieces overlap and the whole circle is covered. Since the movements of the pieces in the last move are ones that already happened or ones that already happened played in reverse, we are only using pieces of functions that we were guaranteed to have by the assumptions. Here are some videos I made about the theorem where I go into a bit more detail And here is the wikipedia page for it
Rainbow Dragon Ferrets - Rainbow Torus Spirals (7/7)
Higher resolution versions at Ello, Imgur, Dribbble, and G+ Photos.
This is it. This is my favorite animation in the set. Because it looks like Ferrets that are wrestling. But these aren’t any normal Ferrets. Do you see how their fur is matted into clumps that look a little like scales? Early human explorers to the Continent of Rainbows often mistook these creatures as miniature Dragons sneaking and slinking around, because those humans were never fast enough to see the Ferrets’ cute faces. I was lucky enough to capture video of these majestic creatures for the first time, but they were shy and hiding their faces. They sneakily escaped when I put my camera away, before I could lure them close and cuddle them.
This is design number 7 of 7 in a series named “Rainbow Torus Spirals”, where the color palette and solid shaded objects were inspired by the works of Florian de Looij / @flrngif.

Derivations
Installation by @ravenkwok is an interactive floor-based display that presents geometric flows as you walk over it:
A collaboration with Symmetry Labs (symmetrylabs.com/) at Gray Area Foundation for the Arts (grayarea.org/) in SF.
Derivations of multiple generative rules I designed in the past were adapt to an interactive LED floor.

Levitrope
Installation by Yoichi Ochiai features two circular tables which both feature levitating mirrored spheres which move around the surface:
Leviation is strongly related to the magic and the enchantment. Media Instruments in Edison’s age are developed to defy the gravity by the rotated visual film images. Here is the artwork called “Levitrope”, this word stands for “lev(levitation)” and “trope(rotation)”. This media installation displays levitated metallic balls and they rotates on the wheel like structures. It reminds us our body and embodiment of ourselves under the gravity. This mirrored sculpture reflects the scenery of the city and lives around the place installed. Rotated and placed “mirrored images” mediates the scenery and our body. We envision these zero gravity kinetic sculpture will new media installation of Digital Nature Age.

Today is the Women’s March… too bad I never paint women? Just kidding. Here’s a closer look at “Miyazaki Bad Girl’s Club” if you feel like an Easter egg hunt to match today’s mood. Yes, I am angry, yes climate change is real, yes we elected a sexual predator president, yes of course women are the fucking future, yes of course Bjork. See you outside. (Also gaging interest in a print, comment 🦇 if you want one)
