After I released "Miyazaki Bad Girl's Club" many of you asked where Kiki and Nausicaa were... well here you are! I have to admit I've had trouble finding ways to express myself politically these days in my personal work, and these Miyazaki art shows have presented a much-welcomed format for me to do so. It actually feels really right that these characters - whose subtexts always consist of kindness, feminism and environmental stewardship- could stand as representatives of super-current issues as well. It occurred to me while drawing today that Kiki would likely be one of the hard-working immigrants protected under DACA. Anyway, #WIP on this one for @spoke-art XX

8.18.17 Anchorage, Alaska. This is a helicopter hangar on Merrill Airfield (anchorage's first airport) that faces onto the runway. Just a few days and not many colors to choose from but the location couldn't be any more serendipitous. Planes were taking off and landing next to us all day. Turns out, this airfield is where my dad used to keep his plane. The eagle was a symbol we all associated with him. Anyway- this one's for my mom, the strongest person I know. I love you 🛫 (at Anchorage, Alaska)
