Tim and Sasha dont have real reasons to be a cat and an otter, tim is just SUCHH a cat to me idk (you could also argue its because ‘curiosity killed the cat’ and tim’s desire to know more about the circus kinda. got him. and ruined his life. Yk but that could apply to all archival assistants lol) And someone suggested to make sasha an otter and i thought it was cute. Not!Sasha would be a weasel btw.

The rest do have more reason to them. Martins a dog because hes very loyal to people he loves even if they dont deserve it. to me hes like a neglected touch starved dog that sticks around its owner because what else does he have. Also, ofc because of the dog he let into the archives, i mean come on!

Jon HAD to be a hare. Look at them!!! theyre so haunted. And the have big eyes. It is so important to me that he is a prey animal. I feel like it fits him being just a guy with bad luck that led to him encountering the fears and how underestimated he is by other avatars. It also makes him more unsettling when he becomes an avatar imo!! I havent drawn this yet, but for post s4 he looks less bunny like and more freakishly hare-like?? to show how he came back wrong. in s1 he could be more mistaken for a bunny, sort of representing the normal guy-> Archivist thing. I also just imagine him kicking his foot against the floor repeatedly when hes irritated and it makes me smile. bunnyy

Peter Lukas is also a dog. He is an old dog who has learned/was trained to not wag his tail or display affection. I feel like this makes the unnaturalness of the lonely more obvious with him, since dogs are supposed to be social and all that. Its also ofc a parallel to Martin, they are both lonely people! they both grew up neglected, you could say theyre two sides of the same coin. Everything else about their designs (besides the white in Martin’s fur during s4 which i need to draw…) differs, because Martin chooses love (Jon) over the lonely while Peter is dedicated to forsaken.

Elias is some sort of fox im really not sure. Hes sly, cunning and i hate. him. My first thought was to make him an owl but i didnt reallt want to Uh. I didnt draw this when i drew him before but!!!!! He has owl eyes because jonah magnus is an owl!! Ill draw all of thisonce my ibis paint x loads its being real laggy. I think fox! elias with owl eyes is a really neat idea ok yeah. sometimes he tries to turn his head around or do owl things out of habit then laughs it off. his design is also meant to somewhat parallel jon’s (in silhouette and colours, with the longer ears mainly) reverse of how peter parallels martin, theyre different species but share their thirst for knowledge and understand eachother more than anyone else.

i havent made designs of these guys yet, but: Daisy would be a german shepherd, basira a barn owl, gertrude a greater sooty owl, melanie a pine marten and georgie a cat.

Gertrude and Basira are owls for pretty much the same reason, they are very beholding-coded animals AND fierce. for Basira specifically its because of her connecrion to the hunt and eye, i think its the perfect animal. Gertrude is such an owl. Georgie’s a cat because of the admiral and also her personality and very reasonable behavior. she also just sounds..? like a cat to me? i cant explain it.
