How and why to date a dinosaur
You might think dating dinosaurs would be an easy task, but in reality itâs actually quite difficult. We date dinosaurs based on where we find their fossils, using the ages of the rocks that theyâre found in. This means that the âagesâ of different dinosaurs is actually indirect and constrained by how well weâre able to date the rocks they were found in. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
As well as this, we know that the occurrences of dinosaur fossils are not accurate representations of their age either. If we know one dinosaur species A was around 120 million years ago, and its closest relative species B known only 100 million years ago, then species B must have existed 120 million years earlier too as they must have shared an origination time due to the way speciation works â we just havenât found any fossils of it during this 20 million year gap though. And we call these ghost ranges or lineages.
What these ghost ranges do, when combined with trees that illustrate the relationships between different organisms, is alter the timings or dates of important events based on exactly how we time-scale the trees and the ghost and true ranges of species.
This uncertainty in dating and the methods we use actually has quite important implications for significant events in the evolutionary history of dinosaurs.
From Lloyd et al. (2016). Distributions represent the range of dates from using different tree-dating methods. The bottom right panel is for different methods applied for Neornithes. Â Â Â

This festive NASA Hubble Space Telescope image resembles a holiday wreath made of sparkling lights. The bright southern hemisphere star RS Puppis, at the center of the image, is swaddled in a gossamer cocoon of reflective dust illuminated by the glittering star. The super star is ten times more massive than our Sun and 200 times larger
âI would like to humanize the space age by giving a perspective from a non-astronaut, because I think the students will look at that and say, âThis is an ordinary person. This ordinary person is contributing to history.ââ

Thirty years ago today, the space shuttle Challenger blasted off at 11:38 a.m. ET. Then, 73 seconds after liftoff, a fireball engulfed the shuttle. As a horrified America watched on live TV, the orbiter broke apart, dooming its crew of seven, including high school teacher Christa McAuliffe, third from right, who was supposed to become the first civilian in space.Â

An aged Hairy Tooth mushroom. I had the hardest time trying to identify this one, I was convinced it was a polypore. The middle of it almost looks crystalline like a geode. #notanexpert #nature #mushrooms #mycology #morigirllife

Long-tongued fly sips from afar
The âtonguesâ of South Africaâs long-tongued flies are certainly long, but theyâre not flexible. So a fly has to hover at a distance to sip from a flowerâs shallow nectar cup, as seen in the above photograph, which was honored in the 2015 BMC Ecology Image Competition.
The drinking tube on this particular species, Prosoeca ganglbaueri, can grow up to 5 centimeters long. When folded backward during flight, about half of it sticks out behind the flyâs body. Extreme length lets flies either dabble in shallow blossoms or reach into flowers with deeper nectar tubes. As the mouthparts of various long-tongued flies lengthened through the ages, more than 120 flower species, including Zaluzianskya microsiphon, coevolved longer tubes.
Most of these fly-specialist flowers bloom pink or white. But those color preferences arenât inborn for the flies, says Michael Whitehead, an ecologist (and photographer of both shots) at the Australian National University in Acton. His current research reveals that flies learn color preferences based on whatâs rewarding in their local floral buffet. In some places, flies learn only a narrow range of sweet colors. But in landscapes with more options, the flies willingly sip pink, white â and blue.
