She had been young and naïve, barely twenty, but no longer innocent. Her innocence, along with her belief in humanity, had been freshly shattered into the blood that stained her hands. Blood she had spilled, from the lives she had taken, with her finger on the trigger and her cheek against the stock, her shots ringing in her ears despite the muffled muzzle, red blossoming from her marks and searing into her retinas with an impossible clarity that seemed to defy distance.

And yet, somehow, she had believed in him: Roy Mustang, obstinate idealist, disillusioned patriot. A man to whom she’d given willingly the fruit of her father’s life’s work, and who had used it to shed so much blood and wreak such devastating carnage. A young man, then, not so many years older than her, who had wanted so much and so ardently to do good that he hadn’t recognized the potential of great power—in this world, in the country he loved, in himself—to do such terrible wrong until it had been too late.
