I listen to these short 10-minute podcast episodes (Mind Your Practice) by Beth Pickens, who is like this consultant/psychologist/helper professional for artists. And she has made this observation that artists are different from a lot of other workers in that they need to do their creative thing. Like to jer the word “artist” doesn’t describe “a person that makes money with a creative practice” or even “person who makes art” and instead its more fundamental, like it’s not just a professional identity, it’s not a description of a hobby you have, but instead it’s about you as a person.

I don’t know how long I’ve been here. Time seems to pass differently. But the place is cozy and private so I have no complaints. And whenever I’m hungry, I go outside with my bowl and walk down the hill to the shore. Sometimes the lake is made of soup. Sometimes it’s huge pasta noodles the size of barges. Sometimes it’s breakfast cereal. Sometimes it’s dumplings the size of great whales. I dip my little bowl and take a portion and carry it back up to the house.
