because there is a balancing act between progressing too fast and not progressing at all with a dog
What's the purpose of a flipped prong?
It’s more so for trainers starting a new dog before you know their correction level, or for dogs that are soft enough that the action of the prong collar is enough without the prongs inverted. Another use could be to teach new trainers how to give corrections on a prong without much of the real ‘correction’ being delivered to the dog. It has a variety of applications.
Did you actually graduate the school or did you leave before you could/fail the course?
I used too much money that wasn’t mine to not graduate, I definitely graduated from the school and left the very next morning to drive back to Colorado. However, you reminded me of another very important flaw about the school regarding record keeping as it literally took me about two months of not hearing from the office before I e-mailed to discover that, behold my robes, according to their files there was no record of me ever graduating the program. I sent one of my instructors a pm on Facebook and they promptly fixed that error with haste, for which I am eternally grateful. I got my plaque and transcripts in the following two weeks, but….seriously?!?!
The office keeper lady who’s name I’m not gonna share, (trust me if you speak with her you’ll know it’s her she has that vibe) is notorious for poor conduct and tbh I have no idea how she keeps a job there.
SHOUT OUT, PLEASE READ.
As a professional's graduate, I do not personally recommend the Tom Rose School, and had typed up a brief account illustrating a few reasons why. I was going to post it publicly but decided not to for my own privacy, however, I am fully willing to send it to you via tumblr's fanmail feature if you request it. This blog will be active again from today and forward- if you follow it and have read past posts regarding the school I highly recommend you request the post to be sent to you so that you may view my now more informed opinion. Nothing on the blog will be deleted or edited, as all accounts were as I saw them at the time and deserve to stay as they are, but I sincerely stress that anyone who reads the pasts posts tagged 'TRS' on this blog also request my current view on the school to have a more informed outlook. You are not getting accurate representation if you do not. As for those following my more casual/personal dog blog that I won't link directly to from this dynamisch blog (but I have done/will do the reverse from there to here), you have likely had a few indications of my more dry and uncensored comments regarding things about the school and those well...I'm not taking them back but I won't be exactly thrilled if they're brought up with -this blog's- involvement or attachment so please, leave them as vague or unlabeled as they are. I do not mind if my followers know about/follow both blogs or engage me on either, I just don't want anyone off tumblr to be able to link the two to protect my privacy/freedom to rant, I hope that's understandable. Feel free to ask for my other URL off anon. Thanks for sticking with me guys and letting me take my hiatus, this year has been (for lack of a better word) fucking crazy.

by Carol Beuchat PhD An interesting study was just published about the genetics of behavior in the Belgian Malinois (Cao et al 2014). This is a working breed used in some of the same service...
"I wonder how they quantify "good drive and initiative for work"? In my experience, the circling dogs have not been better workers, just a bigger pain in the ass to have around." -a quote I strongly agree with after having a couple of spinning malinois. This is a very interesting article, awesome reaaaaaad A+.
what equipment do you train RC and Skids with? it looks like she was wearing a bow in the pic?
Arcee was wearing an Einstein e-collar, flipped prong (spikes out), and a flat collar (lead attached) in that photo. Skids wears a flat, Einstein, and prong (spikes in & lead attached). Agitation collars go on and off randomly either for drive building or…no reason, just to wear them. I haven’t used the electric on them yet, although Skids is coming up pretty dang quick, for now they’re only hanging out in the collars all the time. Same with the flipped prong for Arcee. It wasn’t a bow lol, but that’s cute! I had to fold the e-collar strap like five times to make it fit her u_u”
I’ve seen a lot of buzz today about FCI removing stick hits from their IPO championships, and likely banning stick hits from all FCI competitions within a couple years. This linked editorial is perhaps a bit dramatic, but echoes comments I have seen from many others involved in bite sports.
I’m not yet involved in bite sports, but this is extremely disappointing to me as well. We spend a lot of time decrying the American showlines for what they’ve done to GSDs, but fact is the German showlines are equally as guilty. Schutzhund/IPO is getting so watered down that it’s hardly relevant as a breed test and having an IPO title no longer means much in terms of a dog’s character or worth for breeding. This is just one more steps towards making it even easier for weaker dogs to pass IPO tests.
The next week when your 4 a.m. alarm blares, you reach over and turn it off, grab your band-aids and your hot dog slices and head out into the pre-dawn darkness. Why? Because the virus is no longer controlling you. You are now the virus. The only treatment is more training, the only goal the next title. This is schutzhund. Schutzhund is life.
Terrific read!
Watching your dog at the end of a 33 foot line come up to, and indicate, an article will be the most satisfying experience you have had since graduation. The perfect turn that is taken on a track leg will fill you with the same pride as looking down at a quickly and correctly completed Rubiks cube. Whether you are trying for your IPO1 title and you lay your own 450 yard track with 2 turns, slightly aged and your own articles or you are trying for the elite IPO3 with its 800 yard length, laid by a stranger and aged 45 minutes just to make you queasy, the happiness you experience from a passing score will be the same. Precision, pride, tranquility. Tracking.
(Emphasis added by me.)
Absolutely yes!

evilgrinningdog replied to your post:It’s been awhile! Sorry about that, it’s hard to...
Awesome! So great to hear from you again!
Thanks! And yeah, I've had some pushing from friends to update again. I'm just crazy busy all the time, free time is spent training outside of class or cleaning or getting supplies or goddamn just sleeping lol. I'm going to post a little tidbit every Sunday at least... whimes replied to your post:It’s been awhile! Sorry about that, it’s hard to...
Are you at a school for dog training? Could you elaborate?
Click Here, friend. (Nate made the new site, he's very proud.)

I’d like to see someone try and train a husky there, as it would be pretty much impossible xD
No one has ever passed this course with a husky, that I'm aware of. Not the breed for this kind of stuff. Labs, Goldens, Border Collies, Malinois, Dutchies, GSDs...the usual norm.

I am jealous of everything but you work hard and deserve it all so thats megamazing and it sounds like youre really enjoying it!
Fweeeeep, thank you! Yes, it's so incredibily awesome and demanding. Eats up all my free time and yay for sleep deprivation but it is oh so very worth it.
It's been awhile! Sorry about that, it's hard to use any free time for the blog when I have so much slag to do. Lots of things to discuss and talk about though. I have two class dogs currently, Skids my Malinois and now Arcee my Golden Retriever. The next Mal comes home in April and I'm still on the hunt for another puppy. I came here to learn how to train dogs after all, not just a specific two! TRS is a trip, I really cannot recommend it more. The instructors are amazing people and the level of education is at a higher standard than it's ever been with the new team vs. how it was for previous classes. In random news, Skids dislocated a metacarpal bone in is front left paw last week during preliminary testing and has been out of commission since. He's just now starting to do low impact stuff like statics on the ground, articles, finishes, hand touch, etc. He's favoring it a lot still after heavy activity, Friday we were only able to do three field searches for cocaine before he needed to be put away. It's pretty much impossible to keep a Malinois off an injury, even with meds and being crate confined! Skids is nuts, but we love him and he should be back in the game one hundred percent in a few days. I'm going to be honest though, this put us behind other students in the program as we couldn't start a lot of the new things and when he comes back it's going to be a game of catch up. Incredibly stressful, but it is what it is and I can't dwell on it- I can't make him heal any faster. The school is extremely helpful and understanding, working with me the whole way. Injuries aren't uncommon in young crazy puppies, especially with how much we're doing with them. This happened as Skids flew from my arms in an attempt to fly or some shit I don't know, he has no self preservation instinct it's maddening. Outside of injury? He's awesome. Learns fast and does it fast, with precision. I don't think we're ever going to have any problems with rocking sits or crooked fronts, he's way too rad for that. Drive building is stellar, right from the gate he holds things calmly and bites full, lots of drive and need for the toy. I love this puppy, selling him is going to be difficult after all the work and stress I've poured into him.
Then of course, there's Remote Control. I mean RC, rather, Arcee. Another Autobot joining the ranks. She's a Golden Retriever I picked up on a whim because she was very cheap at $350 and tested well, bred by mom & pop out in Springfield, MO. Field slash pet lines, but a looker to boot with an awesome temperament and disposition for my motivational requirements and not as psycho for Agility as Skids- aka, easier to direct. Her only current problems are minor sensitivity (she's worried about tracking flags for christ's sake), and lack of prey drive that has been steadily improving over time with building. She's a cool little dog that is quite different from anything I've had previously, but I'm enjoying the experience. My goal for her is to pass some requirements, train on smokeless & black powder, then sell after the course. I thought about keeping her indefinitely because I honestly love her, but it's not fair as I'm admittedly easily frustrated when training her, I keep comparing her to my Shepherds and Malinois which is ridiculous! She's a retriever, she isn't going to be driven on that level, and that's okay.
Hades! My main man is doing great, he loves it here. He can bite people, participate in IKT class calling, cuddle with other students, help me learn my footwork, help other people handle, go play at the ranch, hang out in the lounge during lunch...basically Hades is the current dorm mascot and he likes it that way. As for the puppies, he is tolerant and a little smitten when it comes to Arcee but he's indifferent if not a little miffed about Skids. I don't allow contact between any of my sport or working dogs, so it's all through crates. No worries.
MORE THINGS THAT ARE COMING- I have at least five drafts on equipment, things we're learning, organizing training schedules, tracking, scent detection, and obedience sitting here that I haven't finished up or am still tweaking. The thing with this is, I need the time and the knowledge on it to elaborate for you guys. The more I'm here the clearer it is, the more accurate the information I can give you all. Hang in there.
As always, ask questions! It gives me things to answer and talk about without having to compile a post.
100% on my first written test today, that I didn't study for, because I was making this piece of crap. I PROMISE TO STUDY NEXT TIME, but duct tape placement is alarmingly stressful and I needed all the sleep I could get to recoup.
Choking on the chain linked long line thrown over your neck when you go to close a door, #1 reason to master leash management tbh ngl. ***edited to add that I passed the first preliminary test for this today!*** Still choked myself. Awesome. Ball so hard.
Yesterday I went with one of my roomies and another classmate to the airport to pick up her new GSD bitch, a nice little black 11 week old puppy (Eastie/Westie WL mix) and omfg I'm sitting on my bed and sniggering because she is suuuuch a screamer. Can't wait until all of us get puppies...crate training whoohoo.
