the coloured version of a sketch i made last week for the front page of htn's chapter 53 💀 i would love to be able to illustrate an actual book someday hheh
closeups under the cut 🗡 prints!
saw a really interesting post about wake earlier that posited that wake is not vilified by the narrative and i would argue depending on how much we get from her in alecto that she is by. a few characters. in the sense that the characters that do speak of her in that way (john, mercy, augustine, even pyrrha to a degree) are speaking more broadly about her but that can also be laid out in reference to her pregnancy. hm hm hm. i'm throwing darts at a wall here not sure of how to say what i want to say.
Alecto prediction is thatit will have a narrator and break the fourth wall

i think ianthe should get to have bangs klaasje amandou style
hell yeah
i think ianthe should get to have bangs klaasje amandou style
i’ve been mulling on that fuckass post floating around since it was sent to me yday by @g1deonthefirst and i don’t think i have anything particularly new to add because the mutuals can put it better than i can. the fact for me now is i just can’t be fucked anymore to understand jod sympathizer posting (or even empire sympathizer posting, the way people talk about harrow ianthe coronabeth etc falls into this category sometimes) that so clearly indicates how a person feels consciously or unconsciously around issues rooted in global imperialism and colonialism and how they engage with that feeling.
and this is especially prevalent with white fans which is, as i’m sure many other people in the community who are also not white know, very frustrating and part of why i’ve stepped back because it’s really exhausting to see this thing I really really love that i think is trying to engage with those ideas in a meaningful way with ok-to-decent intentions (mixed feelings on this one but that’s another convo) and engage in and it’s just the same exhausting argument over and over and over. reallyyyyyy frustrating and exhausting
sometimes you just have to look yourself in the eye and say. girl we cannot get into a revolutionary politics discussion in the notes of a john gaius post. we simply must not.
see the problem with john gaius discourse is that there are 1) those who read his character as a fathertyrant and therefore analyze through the lens of his daughtersubjects and 2) those who read his character as a flawed tragic hero who means well but falls short and therefore analyzes him through his self-actualization. and the thematic conclusions of these two readings do not tend to match

alecto the ninth comes out. in it, in some manner, the narrative makes an attempt to redeem or forgive john gaius. you are:

I rather think the narrative has to, although that doesn't necessarily mean John will accept it.
When we see the very beginning of his story, John is afraid. He's afraid that if he admits to any kind of failure, he will become unlovable - that love is something that can be earned and lost, that forgiveness doesn't truly exist. The path to becoming a world-annihilating horror is paved with the belief that to be fallible is to be unlovable.
John first meets the nun worrying that she will accuse him of being the antichrist, and watches her die after she has told him that "fear doesn't help us achieve a state of grace; it deafens the heart". Which is all rather 1 John 4:18: "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear." 1 John is one of the New Testament letters, maybe by the same John as the gospel and the apocalypse, depending on who you ask. And it's about how you can defeat the antichrist with the power of friendship recognise truth because it is characterised by love.
One of Paul's first actions is to offer the real possibility of forgiveness to Ianthe: a forgiveness that undoes the metaphysical violence of her actions and could restore both her and Babs. Paul calls themself "the love perfected by death", which is an Oscar Wilde reference, but also rather loops back to 1 John, and "perfect love casts out fear."
And this idea that metaphysical violence can be undone, that it is love, not fear, that gives power, fits with what we know about Alecto the Ninth, in which it would seem there will be some kind of Harrowing of Hell. One of the fundamental aspects of the Harrowing of Hell in Catholic thought is that Jesus liberates Adam and Eve from the underworld, restores them to wholeness with God, and defeats death. John and Alecto are Adam and Eve figures in a number of ways, and it's interesting to wonder what that might mean for them in the end game of the series.
It feels like all of these thematic threads come together to suggest that John might still have the possibility of redemption - whatever that might mean in this series. But it might be just that: a possibility.
An end that might satisfy on both options for the poll could be one where John is genuinely offered some possibility of redemption or forgiveness, and cannot or will not accept it, either because he is so blinded by his desire for vengeance, or by the strength of his belief that he is unforgivable.

controversial and possibly misunderstood poll time
Have we had the 'Was it Pyrrha or Gideon that killed Wake' conversation yet? I feel like I mentioned it before. Well now I'm really asking because I'm sure there's information there but over multiple rereads I feel like it's not clear.
Does Pyrrha at one time say "we pushed her out an air lock" and at other times say "I pushed her out an air lock?"
If it's both, I'm thinking:
Pyrrha blames herself for not stopping Gideon even though she didn't have the power to (can't take over at will)?
Pyrrha blames herself for not stopping Gideon and secretly did have the power to (by taking over at will).
Pyrrha did it and left Gideon not understanding why he killed Wake and his unborn child.
Hold on this works better in poll format.
Who killed Wake?
Gideon (Pyrrha can't take over at will, powerless to stop him)
Gideon (Pyrrha can take over at will, didn't stop him)
Pyrrha
Other (Because I always miss an option)
What's your reasoning? I really want to know. Did I miss something?
EDIT:
I just want you to know that "Vibes" or "fits the story" or any reasoning like that totally works for me. Don't be shy. If you can't think of any evidence in the text, giving more shit for Pyrrha to feel guilty about because it fits to you is totally fine.
