Alice Smeets: The Guetto Tarot

Welcome to the Ghetto Tarot, a project from award-winning documentary photographer Alice Smeets and a group of Haitian artists known as Atis Rezistans. The idea was to take the classic Rider-Waite tarot deck of 78 cards and create a photographic version of each card using settings and objects in the vibrant ghetto of Haiti.

As Smeets says, “The spirit of the Ghetto Tarot project is the inspiration to turn negative into positive while playing. The group of artists ‘Atiz Rezistans’ use trash to create art with their own visions that are a reflection of the beauty they see hidden within the waste. They are claiming the word ‘Ghetto,’ thus freeing themselves of its depreciating undertone and turning it into something beautiful.”

Post-it Notes Left on the Train

Writer and illustrator October Jones, the creative genius behind Text From Dog and these funny train commute doodles, is at it again with these hilarious motivational post-it notes that he leaves on the train and in other random places.The upbeat doodles, which star Jones’ adorable character Peppy the Inspirational Cat, convey positive and funny messages meant to motivate daily commuters. Whether you’re feeling the Monday blues or in need of some encouragement, Jones’ delightful post-it notes are sure to brighten your day and remind you just how awesome you are.

The Daily Mail is turning Toya Graham into their black friend. You know, the one who says white people can use the n-word and who hates “thugs”. Or in this case, the black “friend” every racist can conveniently pull out to prove they aren’t racist for thinking black people don’t deserve to protest. 

According to the DM, Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts mentioned Graham’s “heroics” to a press conference which is how she went viral and became “America’s favorite mom”. 

Batts said: ‘In one scene you had a mother who grabbed a child who had a hood on his head and started smacking him on the head because she was so embarrassed… Take control of your kids. This is our city, let’s make a difference.’

Racists on Twitter are applauding her for “confronting injustice” and “removing the hoodie”. 

In reality, Toya Graham was actually just worried that the police would murder her son and would never be held accountable for it. She wasn’t embarrassed. She isn’t pro-police. She’s scared of them. Scared that they will kill her baby.

So yeah, good on her for wanting to protect her baby. He’s her only son, and he’s only 16. Parents should look out for their children. 

Since then I’ve stopped using them and i’ve had no issues.

I started using them because a guy told me I had a strong smell. The doctor I went to told me that literally no, you should NEVER “clean out” your vagina. The most should be warm water and a mild unscented soap (like Dove - and only use it if you’re cleaning something up, like lubricant or period junk) ON JUST THE OUTSIDE.

Wear breathable panties all the time, such as cotton. If you really feel the need to wear silk, save it for only special occasions, do not make a regular thing of it.

If you can, sleep with at least your bottom half completely naked.

Don’t use oil based lubes, only use water based.

A healthy diet and exercise are key to superior vaginal functions.

Certain discharges are completely normal. (strong odors could be a sign of an infection, if you feel like you have a strong odor, go see your doctor please)

PH balanced products kill off all the bacteria, including the good bacteria inside your vagina. You don’t want to kill off all of the bacteria. It’s there for a reason. Killing it off will make you stink. Use a mild unscented soap on the outside of your vagina, aka your lips. (I use kissmyface brands olive oil bar)

The good bacteria is there to kill off the bad bacteria It produces bacteriocins to kill off intruding bacterias. It provides a wall along your vaginal canal to block off intruding bacterias, and prevents them from absorbing into your vaginal tissue.

Don’t use douches for that same reason ^ douches are horrible for your vaginal health.

Don’t use vaginal wipes or sprays for the same reason, again.^

And pink lace panties and red lipstick?? I mean really? Are you that insecure in your sexuality that that’s the worst thing that can happen to you??

Ancient Art Week!

Various Roman Sculptures

Out of the many works of art that survive from Roman times, some only exist as fragments. I wanted to share some of these fragments with you all because I think a lot of people underestimate just how many images of Romans of color exist.

Some of these are from Roman Egypt, some are copies of Greek originals, some are actually small vases or perfume bottles,  but each one has been determined to be a Black person by the W.E.B. DuBois Institute at Harvard University and included in their Image of the Black in Western Art collection.

On the heels of the conversation (controversy?) yesterday about Sleeping Black Man and some of the questions asked that may not have been answered (or have answers), I wanted to showcase how diverse these pieces are, and how different from each other they look. They come from all walks of life, are of various ages, and each one seems highly individual, rather than of a type. Some may be portraits. Some may be intended as caricatures or amusing pieces, like the old man sticking out his tongue.

Roman terracottas were produced everywhere from England to Egypt, and each area has its own distinct styles.The small bottles, called unguentariums or balsamariums, are debated within academic circles as to what they were actually used for. The marbles are most likely portraits, but usually descriptions or textual analogs for individual sculptures don’t survive.
