She’d been there a week already, acting confused and meek while she waited for an opportunity to arise. Mostly, aside from some minor harassment, the rogues had ignored her existence.

“What about you? Anything you need help with?”

That was the least she could offer, though from the kunoichi’s quick and brutal efficiency, she wasn’t expecting her to have more than a few scratches at most. Chie was, admittedly, curious as to how they’d been found out, but she was patient enough to wait and see if the information would come to her first. If she had to guess, these guys had a bounty on their heads and their days had been numbered as it was.

If she got paid every time a person flirted with her while they were grievously injured, Chie would have enough money to build her own hospital. As it was, the woman hardly blinked at both the invitation and the mess someone had made of his chest, wholly unphased. Internally, she wasn't entirely sure how the hell he was standing, but that was a question she had no plans on asking out loud.

When it came to Shinobi, keeping her nose out of the aspects of their lives that didn't concern her was probably why she'd survived as long as she did.

"I have a counter offer," Chie began, crossing her arms like it would somehow make her look bigger. Sticking around strange men wasn't her favorite pastime, but it was, oddly enough, a common occurrence. "You keep your hands to yourself, and I patch you up. It wasn’t very often she allowed herself time off, but the weather was nice and the area seemingly peaceful, so there was no harm in slacking off for a bit. Medics had been sorely needed in the past, but now hospitals were just about everywhere, and first aid was mostly common knowledge. She wouldn’t be sentencing anyone to death if she took a nap or drank tea by the riverside.

Or at least that had been her line of thinking, until a fight quite literally crashed itself into the river she’d settled by. Chie made it out unscathed, as she wisely stayed some distance away- but the same couldn’t be said for the participants. One fled, likely when it became obvious they were going to lose. The other... Well. Of course he had to faint, therefore making her duty-bound to ensure he wasn’t stupid enough to go and die in the wilderness.

Blessedly, they hadn’t been too far from a little backwater village, where Chie payed a ridiculous amount for one of the only hotel rooms they had available. It was there that she was able to treat her new ward, allowing him the bed so his body would rest. The boy seemed to be a ticking time bomb biologically, but he wasn’t going to the afterlife on her watch.

Unfortunately, the old saying held true. ‘The best patient is an asleep one.’ She’d felt the stranger’s chakra come to life once he woke up, an irritated and sluggish buzzing at the back of her mind, and she’d quickly abandoned her quest to try and weasel some food out from the inn’s owner in favor of returning to their room. Sure enough, he’d pushed himself out of bed and had made his way to the door. At least he didn’t try jumping from the window.

“I may not be your doctor, but I am the person who kept your eyes from melting out of your head.” Chie snorted, not at all concerned about getting on his nerves. He wasn’t the first pissy patient she’d had to deal with, and he certainly wouldn’t be the last.

God, she needed a new career.

“This might come as a surprise, but the bandages were there for a reason. I’d appreciate it if you’d go sit back down so I can give you fresh ones, because as far as I can tell, you won’t make it twenty feet outside of this building in your state.”

She might have worded her sentence as a request, but there was the steel undertone of an order there, something most medical professionals gained after a few months in the field. If you weren’t stern, you’d get eaten alive. That being said, this guy looked like he was going to be a particular pain in the ass.

Chie spends the first six years of her new life grieving.

When she's almost killed a second time, blood that is and is not her own rapidly staining her child-size kimono, it's only then that she realizes she still very much wants to live.

As much as her heart burns for everyone she left behind, Chie knows they'd never forgive her if she lived miserably.

Time passes and she's forced to adjust to a wholly new world, but she heals. Some parts stay more tender than the rest. Everything scabs over in the end.

Until the day she dies, though, Chie refuses to speak her name.
