DUNSTAN X RUNA
the beginning of their relationship;
Runa had learned early that men like Dunstan were not the kind you sought out. The kind you noticed too late, when they were already looking at you.
The hall was loud with drink and laughter, the kind that dulled most people into comfort. It did not dull her. Her eyes moved, quiet and observant, taking in the room piece by piece until they landed on him.
He had not been there a moment ago. Or perhaps he had, she simply hadnât realized.
Dunstan stood near the edge of the hall, speaking to no one, yet somehow not alone. There was a weight to him, something that made space where there was none. His gaze found hers like it had been waiting to. Runa did not look away. That, it seemed, was all the invitation he needed.
He crossed the hall without hurry, but without hesitation either. Each step was deliberate, as if the distance between them had already been decided. Conversations softened around them as he approached, though neither of them paid it any mind.
When he stopped in front of her, he said nothing at first. Just looked. Close now, she could see the details: weathered skin, a faint mark near his brow, the kind of presence that did not ask to be acknowledged. It simply was.
âYouâve been watching me,â he said at last, voice low. It wasnât a question.
Runa tilted her head slightly, unbothered.
âAnd you crossed a hall to confirm it?â
Something almost like amusement flickered in his expression, gone as quickly as it came. His hand moved then, slow enough to be seen, quick enough that it felt inevitable. His fingers brushed her wrist, not quite a grip.
âCareful,â she murmured, though there was no fear in it. âYou donât know what youâre walking into.â
His thumb shifted, pressing just enough to still the space between them. Not forceful, just firm.
âI donât walk into anything,â he replied.
The noise of the hall seemed distant now, like it belonged to another place entirely. For a moment, neither of them moved.
Then, just slightly, he stepped closer. Not enough to startle. Enough to change the air. Runa felt it; measured, intentional, controlled.
And she didnât step back.
~~~
The hall had thinned, laughter fading into quieter corners, the last of the firelight flickering against stone walls.
Runa had meant to leave alone.
She had made it as far as the corridor before she felt itâthat same presence from earlier. Not a sound, not quite footsteps. Just the certainty of someone behind her.
She didnât turn right away.
âYou follow all your company like this?â she asked, voice calm, echoing softly down the hall.
A pause.
Then, closer nowâ
âOnly the ones who donât run.â
Runa turned then.
Dunstan stood a few paces behind her, shadows catching along his shoulders, his expression unreadable in the low light. He looked no different than he had beforeâsteady, composedâbut there was something quieter here. Less distraction. Less distance.
âYouâre far from the hall,â she said. âIf youâve something to say, say it.â
His gaze lingered on her, slow, assessing. Then he stepped forward.
Once. Twice.
Enough that the space between them felt⌠intentional.
âI was making sure you arrived where you meant to go,â he said.
It almost sounded like courtesy. Almost.
Runa let out a small breath, something just shy of a laugh. âAnd if I hadnât?â
His head tilted slightly, considering her like one might a question with more than one answer.
âI would have corrected it.â
There it was againâthat certainty. Not loud, not forceful. Just there.
She should have stepped back.
She didnât.
Instead, she turned, continuing down the corridor toward her chambers. She could hear him follow this time, unhidden, unhurried. The sound of it settled something strange in her chestâsomething she did not care to name.
When she reached her door, she stopped.
âSo,â she said, glancing back at him, âyouâve seen me safely here.â
A beat.
âThat was your intention, wasnât it?â
Dunstan closed the last of the distance between them.
Not touching.
Close enough that it would take very little.
âThat was part of it.â
The torchlight caught along his jaw as he looked down at her, steady, unwavering. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The quiet stretched, thick with something unspoken.
Then his hand lifted.
Slow.
Deliberate.
His fingers brushed her wrist again, like beforeâbut this time they didnât hesitate. They settled, firm, grounding, as if anchoring her in place rather than asking.
Runaâs breath caughtânot from fear, but from the weight of it.
âYouâre bold,â she murmured.
His thumb shifted slightly against her skin.
âYou didnât stop me.â
A pause.
Her gaze flickeredâjust brieflyâto his hand, then back to his eyes.
âNo,â she admitted.
The air between them felt smaller now.
Tighter.
Dunstanâs other hand moved, not to cage, not to trapâbut to rest just beside her against the wood of the door, close enough to change the shape of the space she stood in.
Not touching.
But there.
Runa held his gaze, steady, unmoving.
âIf youâve something more to do,â she said quietly, âyouâd best decide it.â
For the first time, something shifted in his expressionânot softness, not quiteâbut something sharper. Intent, honed.
His hand at her wrist loosened just slightly.
Not releasing.
Just enough to feel like a choice.
âAnother time,â he said.
And then, just as deliberately as he had come close, he stepped back.
The space returned all at once.
But it didnât feel the same.
