A bit of perspective

I don’t often share graphics, being in love with photography since a young age (though not much good at it myself), but this one made me stop and look again since it is one of the best and clearest visual representations of the history of our planet and the life that skims along the shallowest part of its rind that I have ever seen.

The central colours (read clockwise) depict the largest periods in the time scale, the Aeons and most recent Eras (the last three eras on the circle form the phanerozoic Aeon, which we are still living in). The divisions are based on geological changes recorded in the rocks, and the International Commission on Stratigraphy is charged with the duty of finding the clearest and most intact example of each transition and inserting a ‘golden spike’ into the chosen rock formation, wherever it be on Earth.
