Leon shrugged. “Yeah, looks like it.” He wiped the blood from his arm—a bite mark that might already be infected—then dragged his hand across his jeans, leaving a stain. “Seems I got caught off guard this time. Guess that’s what happens when you’re running on no sleep, little food, and whatever kind of water I’ve got left in my flask.” He chuckled as the bite mark began to ooze tissue fluid. “Did you get bit? Because if not, I think we’re fucked. Hopefully the DSO doesn’t find out we’re working together, because that’s a whole other level of problems I don’t have the fucking energy to deal with.”

He examined the bite mark again, unclipped his gun from the holster at his hip, and handed it to Ada.

“We both know where this ends. I don’t think there’s a cure out here in the middle of fucking nowhere. Sure, there are plenty of rundown buildings and whatnot, but there are no resources we can use.”

Her hand met his face hard as the gun hit the ground at their feet. “You idiot.” Another smack hard making the other side of his face match the first. “Are you finished? Is that what this is?”

Then came the barrage of smacks pummeling down ontop of his head, rapidly every single one landing with a heavy emotional blow. “You really need to stop talking so much.” She said realizing she was telling him to shut up in the middle of a crisis.

Each blow weakening as she wore herself down hitting him over it. Then came something that never came from Ada, at least not honestly. Tears, real warm painful tears. “You don’t get to do that..” the hits slowly dropped hands coiled into fists at her waist. “You don’t get to hand me a gun and tell me it’s over and that you have made peace with leaving..”

Her shoulders shook and she stepped back turning her back to him. “Don’t you even think about touching me.. not when you begged me to stay.. not when you made me promise to stay and turn around and decide leaving me alone is the easy route.” She didn’t care that this was a whole new side of herself. He was planning to be dead anyway, may as well make him regret it.

“Ada…” His voice came out rough. He swallowed and tried again. “Look. We both know what these fuckers are like. One mistake and—” He shook his head, forcing the image away. “I can’t— I can’t picture myself becoming one of them. Not like that. Not after everything.”

The building answered him with a sound that turned his stomach.

A slow, wet chorus of groans rolled down the corridor—dozens of throats, dragging their hunger through the air like nails. Hid eyes flicked, calculating. “That’s a lot of company.”

“Yeah.” Leon’s grip tightened on his empty hand, nerves buzzing under his skin. “And they’re not here for a tour.”

Another groan. Closer this time. A shuffle. A scrape—boots of the dead, teeth of the living.

“Fuck,” Leon breathed, and the word tasted like panic. “That’s not good. We need to get the hell out of here—now.” He didn’t ask. Didn’t think. Instinct took over. Leon caught Ada’s hand and yanked her into a sprint. They tore down the hall, their footsteps slapping against tile, their breath sharp in their throats. A door flashed by—*EXIT*—blocked. Another—*AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY*—hanging open like a mouth. Leon dove through it, dragging her with him.

They stumbled into an old laboratory.Broken glass crunched under their boots. Busted vials lay scattered like dead insects. Rusted metal pipes ran along the walls, sweating grime. The air hit them like a fist—chemical rot and old blood and something worse, something that had been dying in here for a long time and never quite finished. Leon’s heart hammered so hard he thought it might give him away.

“They’re still coming,” he muttered. “Of course they are,” he added, like it was obvious. Like fear was a luxury she didn’t bother with.

Leon grabbed two metal stools and slammed them together—*clang*—the noise ringing out. He cursed under his breath and shoved them against the doorway, barricading it with shaking urgency. Another stool. A toppled cart. Anything heavy. Anything that bought time. From the other side: a
