idioms are always funnier in languages you do not understand, especially when a native speaker is struggling to explain and actively digesting how ridiculous it is in real time
Thus why Ahti the Janitor works so well
I donât actually think that contacting your representatives (or protesting, or any other political strategy) is guaranteed to always be useless, and I think that thatâs just as ideological (i.e., not materialist) a view as believing that any these things automatically possess some spectral power or something.
However I wish that people recommending contacting reps or protesting would give some indication of what their desired strategy with these things is.
Many people have taken on a liberal view of politics wherein everything takes place in the realm of the theatrical, the representational, the symbolic, the realm of imagery and vibes or of emotional catharsis, or the realm of speech / discourse.
A protest is an expression of an opinion. A âdemandâ is an expression of a desire. To âdemandâ something is to shew that you want it; to âprotestâ something is to shew that you do not want it.
The mechanism by which these expressions of popular desire are supposed to work on the realm of politics is unclear. Why should capital, or the military, or the police, or the state, care what the people want? Are we to believe that an expression of popular desire can have some overwhelming, supernatural, tidal power of its own? Are we supposed to believe that politicians and capitalists will be overcome with sympathy for the plight of the people and decide to change their minds? History tells us that this will not happen.
In fact an expression of desire is only the first part of a sound political strategy. The desire needs to be 1. specific, actionable, and delivered to bodies with the power to act on it; and 2. accompanied by a threat. Here is what we want; here is what we will do if we do not get what we want. The point of a protest (a âdemonstrationâ of popular will) is to give an indication of how many people are willing to actively, physically intervene in the mechanisms of capital if they donât get what they want.
Take a strike for instance. There is an expression of desire (for pay raises, vacation time, improvement of safety standards, &c.), and there is a threat (if you donât give these things to us, we will stop work and shut down your operation). The threat is likely to be effective because it stops the capitalist from getting what they want if carried out.
Take a boycott (say, Puma). There is an expression of desire (we want you to stop sponsoring Israelâs football team) and there is a threat (if you donât, we will not buy your products and will take other actions to prevent other people from buying your products). This is why BDS worksâboycotts are undertaken not as an organic expression of moral outrage (though they can certainly start with moral outrage), but precisely because and to the precise degree that they work. They work by threatening to deny the capitalist what they want, and by having the necessary infrastructure to follow through (e.g. alternate transportation during the Montgomery Bus Boycotts; strike funds that allow striking workers to, you know, strike).
Now think of contacting representatives. This can only work if thereâs an expression of desire, and a threat. The threat could be, I will not vote for you in x election unless you vote this way in this bill. The threat could be, we will flood all of your lines to such an extent that usual business cannot be carried out. The threat could be, we will demonstrate outside of your offices, at your appearances and speeches, outside your home, and wherever we see you in public such that your life as usual cannot be carried out.
Take a protest. The expression of desire (the people in the streets, the signs, the chants) is part of it. The threat, the demonstration of popular power, should be another. If you donât give us what we want, we will shut down transportation, we will shut down shopping, we will render business as usual impossible. Think of the phrase âa protest without disruption is a parade.â
We do these things not because they feel good or cathartic, not because self-expression is an end in itself, not because we are good people if we do them, or for any other symbolic reason. We should do things to the degree that they are effective in achieving the outcome we want. An expression or representation of desire is exactly nothing. You have to take actions that are in some way geared towards forcing people to accede to your desires.
(Also even the demand-threat model of changing institutionsâ behaviours is only one strategy among many that are necessary. Iâm not saying that this is sufficient to institute full communism or anythingâjust that this is the bare minimum necessary for these particular strategies to be, well, strategic, in the slightest)
i cant get over this post
Prev even when I get my hair washed by a damn professional barber I'm miserable. It's gotta be my hands while standing in my shower or I'm in sensory hell
While I don't know if I necessarily completely agree with the takeaway (unvarnished anyway) I think about the "Is it O.K. to be a Luddite?" essay a lot
Like I think people are too eager to dress up the luddites as secretly proto communists or whatever; but the way this outlines the relationship between people and technology/how technologies gradually come to stand in for a larger political program is bang on (whether thats just in people's minds or not is a bit knotty though)
Hate or love, the tech is often just a means for someone to address a broader project or cultural current because they're what people can put their hands on. The artifact- whether that's a stocking frame or steam boiler or data center, -is the desire to affect a kind of change made manifest & therefore people gravitate to it because it can be "touched" or interfaced with in some way. That usually also means people can get extreme tunnel vision unfortunately, but like, of course they would. For the average person, it's easier to say & think & explain that than it is to address a broader diffuse cultural current or political program. Tricky stuff

Someone has been slowly over the last few months making an avant garde art installation out of an abandoned Boston Market/Checkers. Their signboard messages keep getting torn down so their latest move was to make a flag of a photo of their previous masterpiece "PENIS WIGS FOR SAL" and run it up the flag pole

In terms of establishing the fundamental aesthetic of the 1990s strand of cinematic cyberpunk, the 1993 Super Mario Bros. adaptation is probably up there with Johnny Mnemonic and Lawnmower Man influence-wise, as much as we all hate to admit it.
What the fuck
Welcome to the "learned from this post that the first major live-action feature film adaptation of a pre-existing video game franchise was a dystopian cyberpunk AU of Super Mario Bros. for some inexplicable reason" club.
Part of the reason is that it was directed by two of the folks who created Max Headroom. They also had David Snyder on production design, who's probably best known as an art director on Blade Runner.
must feel good as fuck to curse a prince for being rude to you while you were larping as an old woman for no reason
One chapter into Ulysses and I have 10 times more appreciation for that "Ogre barely even Literate!" meme
Everyone call Ogre stupid and it True! Ogre can only understand popular quotations like "Very well then, I contradict myself" and "Introibo ad altare Dei" not obscure references like "Thalatta!" and "the rage of Caliban at not seeing his face in a mirror" that contextualize the characters' perspective on life within the lens of culture and literature!
Ogre so dumb he isn't even aware of the best-known quotations of ancient Greek literature intended to expose the characterâs shallowness! At this rate Ogre will never get through Chapter 3!

Sigh my boss just caught me staring at this when Iâm supposed to be doing the sexual harassment training module LOL
sorry
You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.
Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go "I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]", that was a bit. What do you mean they're teaching kids a reading method that's tailored to produce this exact error?
Three cueing. Once you learn about it, a whole lot of very frustrating online discourse with US Americans makes so much sense đ
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have
If you were taught to read with the three cueing method, and now struggle to read fluently, you can still learn to read properly!
